well, took the boat out the other day and i lost forward and reverse. so, im debating on buying a used unit or taking mine to have it rebuilt. i was just wondering a general ballpark of how much a rebuild is or what to look for in a used lower unit? i am sure it might be just as cheap to find another used motor but mine runs so strong and smooth to get rid of it. also, i was wondering what lower units would possibly interchange with mine, it is an evinrude 120 vro 25" shaft. any help is great. thanks

thanks wilde1j definitely give them a call tomorrow, that is about the price i would expect for a decent used one. can i use my old shaft out of mine or should i just buy a new one instead? i know i will buy a new water pump kit for it, kinda stupid not to.

You have dropped the lower unit and trying to remove the driveshaft? You have an OEM shop manual, right? You will need one if you're going to remove the driveshaft (the pinion is held with a torqued hex nut from inside.)

no, i dont have a manual not smart on my part what so ever, just trying to use my mechanic knowledge the best i could.yes i have already pulled my lower unit from the motor and see if i could see what was broke. like i said my water impeller seems as if it is seized onto the shaft. they must be pressed on so what is the easiest way to get it off?

Your gearcase has the one piece driveshaft; see if they will install a new one in a new drive for you.

I believe that their gearcase has a 13 spline propshaft where yours is 15 spline.

Your current gear ratio is 12:27 (.44); you will want your new unit to be the same.

I think your motor has a one piece driveshaft. If so, you need to buy an upper driveshaft from SEI. I'm sure they can answer all you questions. Also, measure gearcase bullet diameter to make sure you're getting the right one. I had an '85 140 which used a V6 gearcase. You must also know the leg length to get the right driveshaft. They can probably tell from the complete model number (port side of mounting bracket has data plate).

See the link under the sticky "Top Secret File" for water pump service. That will help you get the pump done correctly. Make sure to use gasket cement on pump and lower unit fastener threads if you want to be able to take the stuff apart at a later time.

The 25" 140's from 1985 through 1991 used a large 15 spline propshaft gearcase, but it was never the same as a V6 because the gears were not the same.

The two piece driveshaft did not come in until 1992.

Take your time and if you're not sure make certain to ask questions. Good luck.
