Alpha One Outdrive Oil Leak

Yesterday we were going to see some friends at their dock. I had never been by boat into their little cove. Since the water was shallower that I normally like to go into we stopped about 50 ft out. I decided to go ahead so I trimmed the outdrive all the up and slowly eased in. When we stopped I noticed oil on the water. I realized that the outdrive oil reservoir was almost completely empty. I had no choice but to get the boat back to the trailer..about a 20 minute ride. We had to stop twice to refill the reservoir on the way back. After the boat was on the trailer, the leak seemed to be coming from somewhere around where the outdrive bolts up to the transom. What could have happened to cause such a big leak all the sudden? Any ideas??

Re: Alpha One Outdrive Oil Leak

It may be the input seal. Or you may not have a problem with the drive at all, it could be the plastic fitting that goes through the transom shield from the reservoir. Either pull the drive off or raise it all the way and turn hard to port and look for the little fitting way up on the starboard side and inside of the transom shield. If you see oil running down the transom shield, your drive is probably not the problem. BTW this is a Gen II. If you see oil coming form the upper bellows it would be your input seal and your bellows is bad.

If it is the oil tube you will probably have to pull the drive and the bell housing to even get to it.

This is the link to the service manual.

This should be in the engine and drive forum.
Maybe someone will move it for you.
