Hi guys, new to this forum and new to the whole boat restore/repair. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction about replacing a remote engine control.

Details that hope will help clarify:

Mercur 850 - 85 hp (not sure what year but guess they were built between 73-77')

I am attaching a picture of the current remote engine control. Not sure if this would be counted as a single lever or dual lever though there are two cables coming into the unit which I guess one is for shift and other for throttle.

What I would like to do is replace with one of the readily available aftermarket units...such as UFLEX or TELEFLEX...but not really sure which ones would be compatible as I am not planning on replacing the cables to the engine just the control itself.

Thanks for all your help.

(Sidenote: for the hell of it attaching a picture of the boat all rippe up..lol...)

Re: Replacing Remote Engine Control

I can't help with your question, but I have that exact controller and if you are going to junk it, I'd be glad to pay you for shipping if you'd send it to me. It may come in handy someday!

If you go with aftermarket and have to replace cables, I'd make the same deal with you. I have Paypal or could send you a check or money order.

Or if you are around E. Tx, I'll drive....

Best of luck to you, Thanks for the consideration.

Oh, and I bet if you go to Teleflex's website they can do a lookup based on your motor type and tell you what you need....

Re: Replacing Remote Engine Control

Hi Jacket4life...if you want to send me a private message with your email we can arrange something if I do end up replacing the whole unit.

Back to my question...my current merc control has two cables that come off the control and work there way back to the engine (not sure what they do to be honest - dumb question..lol)...from what I have gathered they are Type 600A cables.

UFLEX Single Lever

Dual Lever -

The Dual lever is cheaper I notice and guessing this must be because the guts are simpler.

Would either of these two be compatible with current cables and engine.

Re: Replacing Remote Engine Control

I will stick to what I know for sure. There are a lot of other ppl on here that know more than me but here's what I KNOW for sure:

The two cables going to your motor are the throttle and the shift. I KNOW you can replace the current controller with a two lever controller, because that is what you have. I THINK! (WARNING, this usually causes me problems!!!:D) that you can also use a single lever controller, because it is designed with a button that switches you from throttle only to throttle and shift. IDK if you are familiar with how they work, but that's what is on our barge, so I have worked with both. I know the setup at the motor is the same on both, what I haven't ever seen is the single lever taken apart, so not EXACTLY sure how it operates.

I KNOW the cables have to be the correct length, so be careful about getting the replacements. The best route is to measure what you have, ASSUMING that things were operational when it was installed before.

Where are you, roughly? You can add that to your info if you don't mind ppl knowing. If you DO mind, then just tell me in the PM. You just go to the "User CP" at the top and enable location. I'm in E. TX if you didn't notice on my posts.

And yes, I will PM you.

Re: Replacing Remote Engine Control

Hi Jacket4life I am in Ontario, Canada. And thanks for the info...starting to make alot more sense..!

For eveyrones information I sent and email to UFLEX to see if the following controls would be compatible with a Merc 850;

B89 and B90 series ? Single Lever
B47 ? Dual Lever

Here is the response...."Those controls would work fine. With the B89/B90 series you will need to order 1 K35 connection kit to attach the merc cables to the control. For the B47 you will not need a connection kit."

So going to decide which one to get.

Was curious is there any pros/cons between single and dual lever? Or what would everyone recoemend?

Oh, wow. So I guess dropping by is out of the question!

Sounds like you got good info from the manufacturer.

That connection kit is what I haven't seen since I haven't disassembled a single lever yet.

The single lever is the more "modern" style. I like the dual lever just fine, myself. On occasion, the single lever on our barge "hangs" when you try to push the button for throttle ony, so then it goes in gear, or grinds like it's trying. But that is the mercury controller, too. UFLEX and TELEFLEX both have excellent reps as being upgrades of OEM.

If you are still willing, figure out what it would cost to ship that stuff and I will pay for it. I'll P.M. you my address if you want to do it. Thanks again, and good luck!
