Hi All, Im new to outboard motors although im not completely lacking in mechanical skills. Just bought my first boat its a 17' tri-hull with a 90 Evinrude 82. I took it out the last 5 weekends had no problems at all with the motor itself besides the fact it sounded a little high at idle and a starter issue. I replaced the starter and ran half a day just fine. I was at WOT and the motor bogged down like its fuel supply was cut off but slowly regained speed. only got back up to what seems about half power and is real choppy low at idle. Changed the fuel line checked the pump filter and cleaned the carbs (which were in great condition anyway but cleaned them thoroughly). changed the plugs, plug wires are in very good condition. The wires on the coil pack are a lil fringed with copper exposed on just one on lower right cylinder. I put liquid electrical tape on it. but the plug is getting fire. Any Ideals on what this might be?

Re: 90 Evinrude

I took the carbs apart myself and it had no blockage anywhere. i sprayed all ports with carb cleaner and all shot fine no trash in bowl all shiny metal no tarnish or rubber like in the photos on your link. it really acts like its not running on all four cylinders and after going through the fuel pump and carbs and absolutely no sign of any kind of debris it seems that this is not a fuel issue.

The way it bogged sounds like fuel,

but its easy to find out,
hit the choke when it bogs down, if it picks up rpm its fuel related.

If not get a spark tester from autozone and check for spark.
Or just use a timing light.
Inspect coils for little cracks.

I had one that did that to me, turned out to be a powerpack issue.

Well I cranked the motor with the lower right sparkplug undone and even though it is getting fire on that plug it ran virtually the same with that plug undone. im gonna try replacing the coil pack seeing as i already replaced the plug and wire.

Re: 90 Evinrude

Ok i Ordered a new coil last night prolly wont be in until friday or monday at latest. But being as impatient as i am i found a guy with an old junk 90 evinrude layin in his yard. Took the 2 coils that were left on it off one looked crushed the other was in decent condition except the rubber silicone stuff was all cracked. Threw it on my motor and cranked it the motor will sit at idle as before but gets slight inconsistent surges now. also sounds like it gets a little more power than before when i rev the carbs also surges inconsistently while at WOT. Are the surges just that cylinder tryin to kick off? also is it safe to disconnect the plugs while the motor is running i have a rubber glove and am not scared of a little shock but is it harmful to the motor. Dont wanna mess something up while im trying to diagnose a diff problem

Re: 90 Evinrude

Pulling off wires is agood check to see if cylinder is working...its not a little shock its quite powerful
If theres spark present you may have compression or fuel problem.

Re: 90 Evinrude

Have you checked your fuel pump? Your compression?

It almost sounds electrical related......

I would get a service manual (the real one ;)) and start from point A.

Re: 90 Evinrude

When you have the engine running on the hose, put an inductive timing light on each plugwire. Check the flashes from the light. It will show weak spark, misfires and no fires. Compare all 4 plug wires.
