Rust spots in upper unit gears

A friend of mine has a boat he's giving away for free. The engine seems like it needs a little help due to the fact that it was not winterized. I was told the engine only has 20 hours on it. It also has a full tank of 2 year old gas that will need to be pumped out. The included trailer is in decent shape. So I said what can go wrong?? (famous last words, right?)

Anyway, The boat is a 1985 -87 (not sure) Sea Ray Seville with a MerCruiser 140 Engine (I was told the engine was replaced 5 years ago but almost never run, taken with grain of salt) and the outdrive appears to be an Alpha One, first generation. Not sure if the drive was replaced with the engine.

I have been reading about changing gear oil in the drive unit and how it's a good idea to replace the water pump while working with it. So I built a stand for it and drained the oil into a pan. The oil smelled awful. I decided while I was waiting for the oil to drain that I would look under the top cap. I found little rust spots on the gears and bearings. I assume this is throughout the drive unit but I have not cracked it in half yet. Can someone take a look at the pictures and tell me if this is a major problem, or can I just run it the way it is without having to rebuild the drive unit? If I put new high performance oil in it will I at least be able to get a few seasons out of it?

Some other things I am doing:
transom service kit (gimbal bearing, grease seal, water tubes, bellows and gaskets)
greasing u-joints (also pretty rusty but feel nice and smooth)

I can scale those images down if they're too big...

Welcome to Iboats.

I'd pressure test it first, just to make sure your not paying money for oil that's just going to end up in the drink.

If it passes a pressure test then I'd just fill it and run it. She'll either puke or she wont, and SEI drives are a bargain if you end up needing a new one.

PS~ Order a new oring for the top cap you took off, they are 1 time use only.

Re: Rust spots in upper unit gears

I am glad to hear I at least have a chance at getting this boat in the water. Thanks a lot for the heads up on that o-ring. I had no idea. I'll have to go pick one up tomorrow.

Should I hold off on separating the upper / lower units until it's pressure tested? Unfortunately I already ordered the pump, but it probably won't arrive until later this week.

Thanks again

Yes keep the unit together, and get that new oring in there before it's pressure tested. As well as a new drain plug screw gasket in the bottom plug (make sure you pick out the old gasket, they get stuck up in there)

She may be noisy but behind a 4 banger it should hold together, if that is the worst of it. You won't see anymore gears when you drop the lower for the impeller change. Always do any drive removal (top or bottom) in forward gear.

Are the rust spots just surface or are the pitted? Because it was sitting, you got the rust from condensation. If surface, it will disappear. Pitted will be noisey.
