Hi All
I am new to this site. I just purchased a 2007 Sea Ray 175 Sport with a 3.0Liter MCM model mercruser with an Alpha One outdrive. I had it out about three weeks ago and it ran great and everything was fine. I changed the lower unit gear oil last week and then took it out for a ride on the weekend. It ran fine but had troubles with the boat shifting into neutral. It is an intermittent problem sometimes shifts no problem but other times it takes a few seconds to shift to neutral when the control is in the neutral position. Later on in the tour the Power tilt and trim stopped working as well. I believe it to be electrical as it was functioning fine earlier in the trip and there appears to be some corrosion on the wiring. I have found the troubleshooting threads on this site and will try those later this week. Could the shifting be and electrical ground problem as well . Not sure how the shift interupt switch works but am certain it need ground to work. Any thoughts. Thanks. What a great site .

Ayuh,... That might be the Problem, for Sure...

Head down to the I/O- engines forum,...
The factory manuals are available in the Adults Only section there..

Re: 2007 Mercruiser 3.0L shifting and trim problems

Hi
I was able to repair the trim pump problem it was a wiring issue. Nothing a little emery paper couldn't fix. As for the shifting I checked the shift interupt switch it appears to be funcitoning with my continuity meter. Could air in the lower unit cause the shifting problem. I opened the top bleeder screw and a small amount of air escaped prior to oil coming out. I did change the oil from a blue coloured gear oil to a brown coloured Mercruiser gear oil. Could this change also be a culprit. I have not had it in the water since I opened the top bleeder screw and had the air escape. I am hoping it corrects the problem. Before I changed the lower end oil it was shifting with no problem

Possibly a bad lower shift cable... if it's sticking or binding ( or if the covering has came off of the outer casing and has the cable coming through the casing like mine) it will cause all kinds of problems.

I did change the oil from a blue coloured gear oil to a brown coloured Mercruiser gear oil.

Run nothing but Merc HIGH PERFORMANCE gear lube in your GenII.

Depends on your ignition, if you have an EST ignition the shift interrupt switch feeds 12V back to the ignition to cause the interrupt. With the engine running, push the shift interrupt arm to engage the switch, it should cause the engine to stumble/die. Actually, one of the manuals (in the Adults section) has the correct procedure to set the shift interrupt switch, so it cuts in at the right time.

Exactly what is the neutral shifting problem? Does the engine die going into gear or is it very hard to shift out of gear? If it dies going into gear I'd suspect the lower shift cable, if it's hard to get out of gear I would look at the shift interrupt switch.
