Hey guys,

I just have to vent, and really don't know where else to do it, so here goes...

My wife wanted a convertible a while back, and really liked the old school VWs. So, I looked around and found a 91 Cabriolet. Basically, they've been the same forever, with the exception of fuel injection, it's pretty old school.

So, when I bought this thing, it ran, but not much better than a pile of turds.

I replaced a bunch of sensors and finally solved the problem with the catalytic converter. Ran like a top.

Initial purchase $1600. Money in sensors, cat, and tires: $500.

So, we're at $2100 for a car that runs like a top, looks really good (for a VW Cabriolet) and fulfills both of our needs for a convertible: It's 'cute (guess who had that need...here's a hint: It was me. ), it runs good, and it has a back seat and a trunk.

Anyway, one of the first things I changed was the thermostat.

In my mind, in retrospect, that was strike 1.

Reverse cooling and yadda yadda...I had to take off a bunch of bracing pieces for the water pump, down underneath the engine, to get the thermostat out.

This was a first for me...usually, thermostats are as hard to find as...well, they're on top of the engine easy to get to at any rate.

Incidentally, another thing I did while initially going through the car was to 'delete' the heater core. It leaked and is a real PITA to get out. You have to either pretty much disassemble the entire dash or cut a hole in the side of the center console.

On top of that, the switch unit in the dash for all the climate control were broken because the kid i bought it from broke them while installing a stereo...they aren't vertical like a *normal* car, they're horizontal on a board behind the switches. DURP!

But no, that's not even Strike 2...that's just an addendum.

The AC obviously didn't work either...so I decided to delete it too.

This is when I learned about the belts...there's 3 of them. And get this: The alternator is turned by a belt that runs off the AC compressor which in turn has a dedicated belt that runs to the crank. D-D-D-D-D-U-R-P! This is Strike 2, and almost worthy, in my eyes, of a strike 3 just added in. Of course my ac doesn't work, and the pulley squeeks, but can I easily remove the AC? NO! The alternator runs off the AC! AAARRRGHHHH!!!!

So, anyway, the car runs and drives great for a few years...I just leave the AC compressor in and move on...and then my truck breaks down and our 'once in a while' convertible turns into my daily driver.

I jacked it up and looked around underneath, just to be on the safe side. Wouldn't you know that one of the cv boots was totally rotted through, and it was obvious that it was throwing lube.

So, I decided to order a new one, when I saw Rock Auto had a closeout on them and a new axle was $50.

Now, I've changed many a FWD axle, but this one was a pain in the butt. Why? Because instead of a spline that shoves into the tranny, it was bolted to a plate on the side of the tranny. Now, maybe a midget could get in there nicey-nice, but for me, pain in the butt. There are 6 bolts with 12 point hexish but not really torque heads on these bolts. Needless to say one stripped on me (because I didn't have the fancy from-Germany tool and just used a hex head bit) and it took me literally hours to get the last of the 6 out. Strike 3 you crazy friggin' Germans.

And you know what they say:

Strike 1...shame on you, but strike 3...shame on me.

I have owned a few older V.W.'s... nothing wrong with the older ones....good designs , and NOT over complicated...todays V.W.....has the highest consumer complaint record of any car sold...maybe they need to rethink a few basic things....

Yeah, that really annoys the crap out of me, too, but I figured compared to the other three things, that was small potatoes.

Stupid, though, I agree!

Here you go...line up the hub...then get the rotor in position...now get your flashlight ready so once you hoist up the wheel you can look in the lug hole and make sure all three are lined up and then stick the bolt through.

DURP!

Glad someone feels my paint. ;)

I agree with you Stachi, the older ones were better, except they placed the battery under the back seat. I have fond memories of cruising main with a buddy, and the smell of hydrogen/battery acid in the air.

Is DURP something like Fahrvergn?gen?

The wife and I had a Jetta TDI but the maintenance was really overwhelming and the parts must have been made from solid gold......... I was fortunate and sold it for $200 less then I paid and had driven it 4 years.

Man, I was looking real hard at that TDI when I bought my car last year.. It drove great and everything I heard was that they would run forever and get 45mpg. I think I am glad I didn't buy it..

Yeah, parts are outrageous. I'm going to need a new camshaft here in the near future, $1,000 for the parts alone.

Re: VW, I have to vent!

Remember having a family bug in the late 60's. Remember my Dad was a bit frugal then (and even more now) and used to run his tires down until the cords were hanging from the sides like a hula skirt. Always waited for a flat/blowout or two before getting new tires. Had a blowout on the way to a NY Met game and when he went to toss on the spare, it was soft because he didn't know the washer fluid was pressurized by the spare. He had to walk the parkway with the spare to a station and get air. He missed most of the game and curses German engineering to this day!:p

Can't speak for newer V-dubs, but I absolutely love my '02 BMW E39 540i/A sport. Very easy to work on, very well engineered. The only real engineering flaw is the cooling system. Damn plastic end tanks are junk. One of the nicest looking engine bays too. Rides, drives, and handles better than any other luxury sport sedan, and is one of the nicest looking cars ever produced.

Re: VW, I have to vent!

A few years back I bought a BRAND NEW ZERO MILES VW Jetta TDI. That car was super sharp looking and often got better than 45 mpg!!!

Other than that it was a total nightmare! It was in the shop more often than it was in my driveway! The dealer was a swindler, the dealer mechanic was a rip off artist and the VW was a worthless pile of fish chum. Did I mention that this was a brand spanking new car? Yah, it was new.

I ended up selling it for a big loss after about a year and a half.

I'll never go back to that dealer and I'll never buy a VW. Bummer for VW as I know they made some nice vehicles back in the day. Bummer for the dealer as I am very loyal to good people.

I normally don't complain about stuff but my stint with VW was totally ridiculous.

Re: VW, I have to vent!

I have determined that there are two kinds of VWs: ones that are still kickin' at 250k miles and ones that barely make it home from the showroom. Nothing in between :p

Re: VW, I have to vent!

The original Volksy beetle was a great little car....very simple and very hard to kill.
However, the German stuff almost all went in the crapper with the microchip age....which definitely was not ever their thing (hence Daimler buying Chrysler primarily for the electronic technology, etc).
The strong suit of the German stuff was the roadability, handling and performance and quite often looks.....but never reliability or ease and economy of maintenance, certainly over the last 30 years.
The Jetta and the Passat have terrible records and I never seen one that has not had problems.
The only one I would consider these days is maybe the Golf.
My two bits.
BP:cool:
all that said....the chicks love 'em and their image, particularly the BMW brand....so while that is the trend the guys are going to buy 'em, show 'em & drive 'em.:D;)

Re: VW, I have to vent!

If it ain't air cooled, toss it back. All VW water cooled products I worked on were the worst designs ever. Actually, even the air cooled VW's had a lot of wacky designs, luckily, many of them were sound.

VW's heating and cooling designs are only second to the complete crap built by Volvo.

Two brands of car I will most likely never own again. Except maybe a 60's bug.
