I'm stripping my powerhead to do a full overhaul, and have come to a halt at undoing the big end bolts. Can anyone please advise me which socket I need?
I was told that it was possibly a 19point 5/16 but am having difficulty in sourceing one.
Regards
Alan

5/16 - 12 point. Nothing special, except it has to be thin wall and high quality, like a Snap-On. El Cheapos will probably be too thick or break.

Tightening torque is 348-372 inch pounds (29-31 foot pounds)

If it is a special socket, why would you not want a 6-point?

FR wrote it... so I wasn't arguing....;)

But why? Are the bolt heads 12-sided?

The bolt heads are 12 point. That's what throws everybody because they look so wierd.

The bolt heads are not hex and require a 12 pt socket. I've never seen the head type used for anything else. Clearly, you've never seen an outboard powerhead apart.

They are double-hexagonal then, or dodecagonal?
Never had a powerhead that far apart....no, but have intimate knowledge of fasteners.

And connecting to the 12 point socket answers my question...obviously double-hex...30 degree rotation.

Thanks for your help guys, it was much appreciated.
Yesterday I purchased a Kincrome Part No. KC341C 8mm 12 point deep socket
which fits perfectly and did the job just fine.

Hm.m.mm., 8mm? Now you know something that I don't. 5/16" is what I've always used.

Interesting...the hex on almost all hose clamps is 5/16, but i have found for a long time that 8mm works better.

The first motors I did I didn't own any metric sockets!
