Hello folks, I acquired a 2000 115 hp johnson that starts great, and goes to beat heck at first but after I cut the high speed then it wont go again...if I ram the gas it dies. Im no mechanic but its like its gas starved or some cylinders cut out. After many instances of limping home and restarts and being towed in with a canoe etc....i accidently discovered that when i push in the key (choke) something kicks in like cyls firing up or just getting enough gas then I can go. Idles nice at 1000. Gas is fresh with sea foam. Have a boat mechanic freind who was going to adjust then he did research on the web and said its out of his hands because that engine requires some special expensive tool (sigh....of course)...does anybody have any ideas?

if you think about what a choke does normally...cuts the air and enriches the fuel -air mixture..

your motor isnt getting it correct portion of gas...because when you shut down the air...your motor starts to act happier..

that leads one to think fuel restriction...but since it starts normally.... then actas badly after a slowdown.

id think of what is possibly changing...

maybe your floats have a temporary sticking...

does your motor have OIS ignition?

wondering what special tool your frind is talking about...

maybe it is the tool needed to check the tuneup on an Optical Ignition motor

thanks bob...i dont know if i have OIC cant find it in the manual. Is there any way to try adjusting fuel intake? remember after i get it going again using choke then it will fly. temp float sticking sounds interesting...i was told perhaps carbs need cleaning.. in the old days one could 'fiddle' with adjustment screws until the engine sounded nice...even a mechanical dunce like me but now it seems that everything looks more like computers then engines inside. again ...it will sound like maybe only three firing then i choke and 'poof' something kicks in then i can take off again..until the next time i throttle back. anything i can just 'try' without blowing everything up?

from reading this forum for a year, many of the more seasoned vets say that if choking temorarily solves the issue, it is defiinately fuel delivery related...and all the carbs should be rebuilt to clean that slate....

because cleaning the carbs will clear any jet clogging and or any sticking compenets...ie float and valve..

Id clean out all you fuel lines...make sure the tank is clean...new inline filter and water seperator...( I have three inline paper based filters and a fuel seperattor!!!)

be carefull it sounds like you may run into a lean condition....which could ruin your motor fast...

address your carbs before you continue to go out

good luck

thanks bob i will be checking out what i can...fuel tank is buried so i cant do much with that though i have run with an exterior tank before and it does the same....thought the filter looked good last fall but wouldnt hurt to change it...im going to check out what kind of a job cleaning carbs is...i can do super simple ones, may their all basically the same for all i know. thanks again

I know guys are quick to recomend the rebuilding of carbs...and for sure it...is kind of a guarentte that those issues...but I just rebuilt a carb for my four stroke 15 hp...and there were several step that could have been easy to mess up..the previous owner left a small rubber check ball out!!!

now on your motor, you have FOUR carbs...all the floats need to be adjusted ..and usually the GUAGE doesnt come with the kit!!!

then sometimes there is a special tool needed to adjust the needle valves...but you can make due with other tools...but they right tool is best

if you get the manual you can read through it before you attempt a task...and see if you feel comfortable..

plus with carbs, you have all those linkages to set back on the carbs..

not fun and not fast...

plus you have to have compressed air and good carb solvent... and little pieces of small dia wire to clean out certain passages...

for the novice first timer????

HMMMMMM maybe

maybe not

good luck

Thanks I appreciate your input Bob...youve given me leads to check out next time I get to the water I'm starting to wonder if running hot then stopping somehow creates a gas shortage that is remedied by choking. Manual says boats with built in tanks (mine) and filter/primer units may create adverse conditions for getting fuel. But of course I need the primer bulb. Wonder if the filter could 'look good' and not be. I suppose I could just start nickel and diming stuff..replace filter, hose etc but that gets long. Thanks again
