Hi guy, I just bought my first outboard motor at an auction several day ago,(140 bucks, is it a good deal?), it had number 6 in front so i guess it is a 6 hp? the serial number is something like: 6602E-E052145, it came with an Evinrude gas tank, quick connect fuel line with a very small hand pump, which is very hard to operate, i got 6 gallons of gas mixing with 14 oz of evinrude oil. After connecting the fuel line to the gas tank and the motor and put the bottom end of the motor in a bucket of water, i tried to start it but nothing happen, i pumped the little hand pump like hundred time but it is very hard to tell if the gas got to the motor or not, so i went ahead and took the "out" fuel line from the fuel pump on the motor to the carb. and fill the carb. with gas from the tank and the motor started and ran for about 30 sec and shut off because she ran out of gas, so here are my questions that i hope to get some answer:
1) what year is this motor and is it a 6hp?
2) what is the proper starting procedure for this type of motor? i put the throttle handle in Start position, the side gear lever thingie in the middle, the choke stick all the way in and it start but i'm not sure if this is the proper way to do it.
3) Base on what i experienced, is this a fuel pump problem? How do i test the pump? it look pretty new but it might not mean anything.
4) If it is fuel pump, does it repairable/rebuildable? or do is just have to replace it..
Thank you for any help that i can get.

Re: Help with my Evinrude please!!!

fuel will bypass the fuel pump when you squeeze the primer bulb. Your problem may be the fuel line connecting the pump to the carb, but i'd replace all fuel lines

You pull the choke knob OUT to cold-start it!!! Push it back in when it starts. If it isn't running in four or five pulls, something is wrong. Don't be wearing out the starter and your mind by cranking a dead horse. Troubleshoot it to find the problem. Your motor is a 6hp, 1966 year.

You prime the motor with the little bulb in the fuel line - squeeze it until it is firm. The arrow on the bulb points towards the engine. If the bulb does not respond, hold it with the arrow pointed up and try it. The primer bulb initially fills the float bowl at the bottom of your carburetor; the rest is done by the engine vacuum and the fuel pump.

by now i probably squeezed that priming bulb about a thousand time and it never got "hard" like you say, i can heard the clicking noise on the fuel line just below the priming bulb but also sound like the fuel line sucking air back after each prime, i got no fuel to the carb. bow, like i said if i fill the carb. bow manually the motor will start at second or third pull.

I recently had a similar problem with a 40hp - felt like after pumping the bulb, gas/air was being pulled back into the tank with a clicking sound. It turned out to be a bad fuel pump.

how much gas is mixed with that 14 ounces of oil?

For 6 gallons of fuel, you should use at least 16 ounces. That should put it at 50:1:cool:

Thanks 1946Zephyr i will put more oil in it, and i did put the motor in a very tall bucket so the water line is well above the oil filler plug, by-the-way, does this motor suppose to ''pee'' to show that the water pump is working, i know that bigger motor does but not sure about this little guy.

fp rebuildable...yes...successfully?...hit or miss...telltale?...no...exhaust and water mist will exit the 2 holes at the rear of the exhaust housing below the cowling...look like "nostrils"....plenty (understatment) of recent posts on exactly how to replace the impeller in the 6hp...read F_R's post on this procedure

If your primer bulb isn't getting hard and you're not getting fuel to the carb, I'd say the chances are you've got; a leak in the fuel line somewhere, bad check valve in the bulb, or a leak in/at the tank. I'd start by checking my connections from tank to motor. If those seem solid, I'd probably replace the entire fuel line from tank to motor.
