OMC King Cobra Tilt Issue

Hey Guys....hoping someone may be able to help me out. I have a 91 Chris Craft Concept 228. It has a 460 King Cobra in it. I just put the boat in the water this past Friday and everything went well. When I went back out to the boat on Saturday, I went to operate my power tilt to lower and raise my outdrive on my throttle, and it didn't work. The previous day when I launched the boat I used it and it worked perfect. When I was hitting the button this time, it was not doing anything. It normally makes a noise (like the pump operating) and it wasn't doing that at all. It was as if there was no power to the tilt. I went in the engine compartment and looked around to see anything obvious. I messed around with one of the wire harnesses that has a large round black plug connector that is to the left of the tilt pump, and as I was holding it in my hand it came apart. I thought this was the issue. I plugged it back together and tried the tilt again and still nothing. I had a buddy with me and had him jiggle the plug connection around while I operated the tilt button on the throttle and while he was doing that, it started working again! But as soon as he would take his hands off of it, it would stop again. Long story short, we could not get it so that it would work all the time without holding it together in our hands. I put some dielectric grease on the plug connections thinking that would help, and it did not. This plug connection is obviously the source of the problem, but now I'm stumped as to what I should try next.

Does anyone have any suggestions here? I'm pretty much at a loss. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.:)

Re: OMC King Cobra Tilt Issue

Can anyone help here?

Howdy,

Well, your trim system is the same as just about ALL Cobras. It's got same pump and wiring as all of them.

You have a switch in your shift control that runs it up and down.

You will have to obtain the wiring diagram and trace the wires to the control and then, using a simple volt meter, determine where the open circuit is. ( I don't remember if it has a trim limit switch but if it does, that could be the culprit!!)

You might have found part of the problem in the main connection and it might have been loose all this time and finally came apart.

There's really no good way to troubleshoot over a discussion forum. If I remember correctly, the service manual has a fairly good troubleshooting procedure to locate open circuits and other simple problems.

If you do not have an OMC service manual for your year and model number and you want to be able to do service work yourself, you NEED to get one (NOT A SELOC OR CLYMER, those are good for starting wood stoves though).....Ebay is a good place to find one. They sell for up to $100 or so. (That's what I paid for mine when I needed it!)

Also, as an aside, (and maybe you know this....) If you have not removed your risers and checked your riser gaskets for leakage (and have replaced them) in the last few years, you NEED to do this. If you let your riser gaskets leak, you will ruin the engine.

If you have not removed your drive and checked the alignment, you WILL destroy the coupler. (can't buy those new any more)

If you use the boat in salt, it's raw water cooled, and you have a lot of years on the manifolds and risers you should consider inspecting them for excessive corrosion.

This is only to prevent you getting stranded and towed. You can't easily buy them either.

I guess what I'm saying is that if your engine/drive is getting tired and in need of a LOT of replacements, you should consider replacing the whole mess with either a Volvo Penta or Mercruiser Bravo engine and drive.

Just a thought.........

Regards,

Rick
