Wont turn over in nuetral

91 70 hp Evinrude will turn over when I put it in fast idle nuetral. When in straight up nuetral it will turn but when I push in button and pull up on release and move to forward position it will do nothing. Any ideas. Thanks

Not sure what you mean by "it will do nothing." What should it do when you "push in button and pull up on release and move to forward position"?

One more question: do you have an evinrude control box with a "high idle lever", or a throttle/shift control built in to the gunnel with a button you push to move the throttle control into fast idle?

Has it been like this since you got it, or it was running fine and this just started?
Any other symptoms?
Any recent mainenance performed on this motor?

It usally takes putting it in fast idle to start unless recently started.

will do nothing - meaning when I turn the key it is like there is no battery.

I have this set up - throttle/shift control built in to the gunnel with a button you push to move the throttle control into fast idle?

it just started doing this, although after a few try's I can get it to work.


Any other symptoms? Always starts great on the trailer with muff. once on the lake I always struggle getting it started.

someone set idle speedwhile the motor was on muffs.

idle speed must be set high on muffs, then fine adjusted , IN THE WATER, WITH MOTOR IN GEAR.

on muffs, there is no backpressure on the exhaust.

if center button is not releasing the shift, it will not start, as neutral safety switch, in not engaged.

Can just the nuetral switch be replaced?

You can, but the switch itself is probably ok since it works when the stick is straight up. Might just have got gummed up and need a good cleaning. Or shifted out of alignment to where it disengages when you go to fast idle.
