I don't want a fuel flow meter on the boat. Then it always reminds just how much it sucks down the fuel.

Sorry about the mix-up on the earlier posts. Your quote above pretty describes why I replied to your initial post the way I did! I didn't want anybody thinking that they could double the gas mileage of their boat by putting on some Smart tabs. Glad to see that you realize how much boats suck gas!

Re: smart tabs affect on top speed?

After 10 years, after selling thousands of Smart Tabs, after numerous Tests by magazines, invidiuals, and even boat builders (Larson/Volvo) we can most often get the tab adjustment tuned so that there is an increase in top speed. In fact it is rare that we don't see an increase. However it is important to understand why there is an increase in speed. The increase comes from being able to adjsut the running attitude of the boat, eliminate the porpoising, and adjsut the prop angle (TRIM) to get the best prop "bite".

Without trim tabs most boats will porpoise when the trim is moved to a vertical position (most efficient for prop bite). When trimming the motor down (NEG) to eliminate of minimize the porpoising you increase prop slip. By using trim tabs to control porpoising, and ride the prop is left to do it's job of propelling without compromise.

The preference of Helm controled tabs vs. Smart Tabs should be made by the owner based on his use of the boat and personal preference.

One of the posts indicated that the Smart Tabs would always limit top speed because the water pessure on the tabs would cause resistance, actually it causes lift which means a bit less boat in the water, enough bow pressure to eliminate porpoising, and a more controlled ride like the suspension system on your car.

Helm controlled tabs can eliminate porpoising with a slight deployment which increase stern lift and resulting bow down pressure. It is important to make sure you do not deploy the tabs too much as this will push the bow down more than necessary. (This would be the similar to an improper pressure adjustment on Smart Tabs). Small adjustments when at cruising speeds is the name of the game.

Prolly not seen that much...but yeah, that was me, and I was wrong!

I have seen boats lose top end speed for the exact reason I mentioned, that being said, I can not verify that their smart tabs were adjusted right...After reading the above post, it sounds like it would be uncommon to not gain top end speed. Thanks for that info!

RL;

You are welcome, and thank you for the reply.

Many times boat owners use multiple devices to correct problems such as Bow Rise. For example, they will install a hydrofoil and then our trim tabs. This combination will always result in poor handling and a loss of top speed. Unfortunately every boat is different in one way or another, and this makes it more difficult to make the proper choice of products. Additionaly the advice will vary widely.

I am glad you caught it so other's did not think they could save that much in gas. If only it were true.

More great info. Just after getting all of this information straight during this thread, I'm almost ready to buy a pair! lol

Re: smart tabs affect on top speed?

Took my 81' Mark Twain V-Sonic 170 out for the first time since installing the tabs. It was windy as hell so I couldn't get a good idea of how the tabs affected the speed, but the worked GREAT on porpoising and bow rise. The boat planed seemingly instantly and handled the white caps with relative ease.

There was only one other boat on the lake stupid enough to fight the wind, it looked to be a newer 19' I/O and he was really struggling, bouncing all over the place. Hard to say if that was just a driver problem though :D

I'll try to remember to report back on speed once I can take it out on a nice day, but so far I'm very happy with the Smart Tabs.

Re: smart tabs affect on top speed?

just put smart tabs on my 19' Rinell w/ AQ 131. 270 drive. My drive stop was on the inner most pin to keep the bow down before and my to speed was 31 mph @ 4800 rpm with a 15" 4 blade prop. I will report back on how it performs with the changes.

88' Checkmate starfire, 18', mercruiser 260. Real life experience - still adjusting (have run the boat 3 weekends since installing.)

Holehot, bowrise, low speed planing - all significantly improved.

Cruising (anywhere from 20-50) seems a tad more labored and takes a couple hundred more rpm (however - a fair trade, all porpoising is gone.)

Highspeed running... lost 2-3 M P H off the top (had to make sure I got that right), and the handling at high speed (about 63 gps now) is kind of scarry. The boat was super stable at speeds before, now seems to dance back and forth off the plates in any water less than dead calm.
