mercruiser 4.3, Starter spins had but gear doesnt throw into the flywheel. Had starter rebuilt, new slave solenoid, new battery. Does the samething as it did when I started this project. The starter was bench tested after rebuild. It spun and engauged. Im certain its hooked up right, tight, all teeth on flywheel. why does it engauge on a bench test but not on boat? Now what?:confused:

Did the bench test put the starter under load? Or did it just test to see if it would spin and engage w/o load?

W/o load on the starter, it isnt much of a test...probably just need a new starter, or re-build again.

Are you sure it doesn't throw into the flywheel? I ask because it sounds more like a bad bendix to me. If the starter spins and not the engine - at a high rpm - then the chances are good the bendix is bad. That wouldn't show on a bench test.

wasnt under a load. I talked to the guy that rebuilt it, he said it looked brand new inside as well as the rest of engine componets. He said he replaced something in it but i forget what he said. I am charging the battery now though its close to being a full full charge. I read though some posts on here with pretty much same issue. Hopefully it works. I took rest of week off to get it ready for the holiday

Yeah, if the battery was charged when you tested, and it didnt engage, it's still your starter...

I'd have a hard time believing you bolted the starter on backwards...and no, I dont think thats possible. But..the gears should be facing the flywheel...I guess you could check that

My guess is still that it's a bad starter.

All the shops are atleast 2 weeks out. I think I might just buy a new starter

Yep.

As long as you are sure the flywheel is not damaged, then your starter is bad.

Are you sure you've got your battery cables hooked up right? If they're reversed it can cause the starter to turn backwards.

when you say just spinning does it make a lot of noise or just spin,if its grinding it needs to be shimmed, are these chevs,if so take main power off starter and then put power to start on solinod it should kick out bendixs,my guess needs shimming.

Re: Starter Spins but wont engauge

my starter after the last one which would spin and then grind and take forever before actually getting the boat to start. I inspected the flywheel and while there were some chips I didn?t see any major damage such as missing teeth. After getting the new one all set up I connected the power and it seemed to engage the flywheel just as it should. I brought my boat out, connected the muffs, and tried starting again. The first few attempts seemed good but on my last try it seemed to bind a bit. Now when I turn my ignition the starter just spins and it seems the bendix isn?t popping out to engage the flywheel.

I am going to pull the starter again to inspect it but does anyone have any clue why a new starter would all the sudden just spin and not engage they flywheel?

Thanks!

You might want to try shimming the mount bolts. Over time the surfaces wear and the starter will sag a bit. That little difference will change the engagement angle. Should be able to get them at any parts store for a couple of bucks.
