Hello All....

I can get my hands on the correct "puller" for my flywheel; but the first hurdle I have to get by is getting the center bolt off. I have to devise some way to keep the flywheel rom turning while I remove the bolt.

I cannot find the tool that the shop manual shows; a lever thing that catches in the flywheel teeth and keeps the flywheel from turning while the bolt is loosened or torqued down.

What other methods can I try? What works and is cheap?

Thanks for reading, Chuck

put a large screw driver between the teeth of the starter gear and the flywheel. Be easy on it, no fast or sudden jerks.

A strap wrench works. Vice grips makes a chain wrench. If you add a few links, that works too.

hope it helps

Well; I tried wedging a socket wrench between the flywheel and the top cowl support frame with no luck. The thing really is on there.

How about an impact-wrench? Has anyone used that? Air or electric?

BTW...it ***IS*** a counter-clockwise turn to loosen; right????

Another oddity...My Genuine Mercury Shop Manual says it's a 5/8" bolt. Nope; mine is 15/16.

Any other suggestions are certainly welcome.

The inside of the nut is 5/8 inch. That's how we measure them. A common 5/8" nut is 15/16th across the wrench flats.

Yes, it is a normal right hand thread. A coupla hundred pounds of torque should loosen it, unless some ace, spelled with a double S, put loctite on it. In that case, you'll have to heat it to about 300 degrees to get it to come loose. It'll wreck the nut, but it's a commodity fine thread half height nut. A standard height will work in a pinch.

If you do that, it'd be good to use a small oxyacetylene welding torch so you can heat the nut in a few seconds and not screw up any magnets or coils.

Theoretically an impact wrench would be hard on bearings. If it were mine, I'd give it a try, with a good impact wrench, a standard socket (lighter), full force right away, rather than beat the snot out of it for five minutes with a cheapie. That's a very solid setup with no way for a torsion buffer like a long bolt would give ya, so if it doesn't come loose in a couple of seconds, it ain't going to. It's glued. Don't try to jam the flywheel when yer hitting it with an impact. You might break something.

hope it helps

Re: Procedure for removing Flywheel Merc 850

Thanks for that John and everyone.

Mine is an un-molested original engine, so there should be no loctite on there unless Mercury used it when it was originally assembled.

I'll try it again today.

I thought that I'd remove a couple of the flex-plate to flywheel bolts and install a 30" long piece of metal on there. This will give me some leverage to hold against.

What do you think of that? Better than the impact wrench?

Thanks for the help,

Chuck

Works for me. If it were mine I'd have smoked the nut off by now, and be looking for a new flywheel and a way to rethread the crank.:D I admire your patience.

Well John, with your 4,088 posts on here; I'd say you have a fair amount of patience yourself.... :)

Thanks for all your help on the forum.

The deed is done. I tried a C-Clamp on the flywheel that prevented it turning. She finally gave up.

Now I need to order the puller and on to the next step.

Thanks to all, Chuck
