Shore lander trailer vin plate?

I just bought a 1980 imperial tri-hull for a great price. New paint and interior, just needed a new starter, which I got for $70. The down side is the trailer has no paperwork. Rather than register it as home made, is there a vin plate stamped somewhere I could take to the DMV and get a new registration for that trailer?

Thanks

Re: Shore lander trailer vin plate?

Going to have to tell us what state you are in for some specific advice. But my bet is going to be "no" on both counts....for some reason it seems many trailer companies used more of a sticker than a stamped plate so the number is probably long gone....2nd even with the number most states need to know the previous registered owners information in order to transfer registrations....

let us know what state you are in and maybe somebody can give you some work arounds....

btw...why do many people not put what part of the country they are in...I can understand not putting your home address in there but the state you are in would be very helpful with alot of questions that people ask....just sayin'

Re: Shore lander trailer vin plate?

Assuming the trailer is the same or approximately the same year as the boat, I'd have to agree it's probably long gone. My 1999 sticker is pretty faded I can imagine what one would look like almost 20 years older. But if by some miracle it would still be there here is a quote from their site:

"You should find, if they haven?t faded or fallen off, two stickers: one behind the tongue on the inside of the side frame ? the second by the right taillight on the outside of the side frame. This is a 17 digit number that begins with 1MD; if it does not begin this way, then it?s not a ShoreLand?r. If you can?t find these stickers, then check your receipts and records from your dealer; this VIN should be recorded somewhere. If you do not have it in your records, check with the previous owner if you are not the original purchaser."

And if you are looking for a manual, you may find one here:

Thanks for the info. I'm in NY. I have the name of the Previous owner on the registration for the boat, so I'm assuming its the same name that would be on the trailer registration as well. How big of a deal is it to register one as home made?

I bought a shorelandr trailer and sure enough the vin number was rubbed off. I was able to register and title it as a homemade trailer without a problem. Any trailer with less than 3000 pound capacity does not need to be tested. But I'm not sure how it is in NY.

I also have a shorelander trailer and no title or vin. I called shorelander and told them I needed to apply for a title and vin. I had to send them like 4 pictures of the trailer from different angles, the bill of sale from when I bought the boat and trailer, and I think a check for 20.00 dollars and in a week or two I had a new tilte and new vin tag to apply to the trailer.
Was really simple and well worth it than registering as home made.

I believe NY is one of the tougher states for home made registration....from what I understand they will want to inspect it as opposed to NJ that just wants to see some receipts for metal and tires and stuff.....hopefully somebody from NY will chime in....

I need to fill out a DMV form, and bring in a copy of a weight certificate, and any receipts fro materials used to build it. Kinda hard when it's a factory built one......... I'll let everyone know how it goes

From the Shorlander web site....

Your 17 digit VIN Number starting with 1MD is located on two stickers: one behind the tongue on the inside of the side frame ? the second by the right taillight on the outside of the side frame.

Maybe the second one you can still read.

(on my trailer the second vin was actually behind the light fixture).

No nothing there for plates. I have the original owners name and address, hoping the DMV may be able to trace back previous registrations to find something for the boat? Going to call my contact at the DMV tomorrow. I'll keep everyone posted.

Re: Shore lander trailer vin plate?

you should start a new thread with your question.....but yes you do have to add the weight of the trailer and calculate weight of fuel, batteries and a few hundred pounds for miscellaneous stuff. I would say at a 4500 lbs limit its a no go.

Call Shorlandr' and provide them with the pictures as someonelse said and $20.00. There is a place on their website that will walk you through it. I did that with a 1984 model and it was real easy to do, plus the lady, (Nicki if I remember right), I talked with was real helpful, sent me a pdf of the owners manual as well. Now I have a new title and new VIN stickers.
