I cant fish!!!

Hi guys.. I grew up boating on a lake putting 1 million miles on my 1965 aluminum boat with a 9.9HP seahorse dated 1962. That started my love for boating at 3yo.

Now I live in Ma and have a 27' Monterey. Not really a fishing boat but I enjoy drowning bait with the best of them. My problem is I cant catch fish to save my life. I dont know anyone who fishes and only 3 friends that own boats.

How is the best way to get fishing and learning what to use, where to use it and how? I need to start with the basics and need help. Thanks so much.

When people ask that question I give them two answers. The first is to is a go fishing on a couple of charters boats. Watch and learn how the pros do it.
The next thing I tell them is to join a local fishing club. Best way I know to meet people with the same interest.

I?m an officer in the local chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportsmen Association. We have over 300 members in our local chapter along. Each month we have a guest speaker come in to discuss tactics and a tackle vender. We also sponsor three, member only fishing tournaments a year. We just had our Striper tournament and the first place winner walked away with almost $1,500 in cash. Not bad for the $75 entry fee

The OP sounds like me... I've been on boats where everyone caught fish but me. I like fishing, but I'd like it a lot more if there was a little 'catching' involved.

For years I've used "fishing" as an excuse just to take the boat out. Once the annoying little varmits start nipping at the bait then they'll get the hook caught in their mouth and you have to do something with them. What a pain. You're better off without them!

Of course, every now and then a big one will wander by and.....

Ask the guys in the local tackle stores if you're using the right gear and fishing in the right places. Spend a little bit in their shop and they're glad to show you how to approach it. One book I couldn't recommend enough is The Fisherman's Ocean, by a Dr. David Ross from right there at Woods Hole. Really learned a lot from that book. Another good author is Milt Rosko who for many years has been writing great articles and books specifically on fishing that part of the US.

You'll catch fish and when you do, post up some pics and a report!

Don't you worry,go to the tackle shop and talk to the guy working there and ask him for a reliable person that he knows,so that he can go out and show you how to catch them.Getting fishing partners is one of the easiest things in the world,if you have a boat.Try it,you'll like it.lol

If you talk to the guy at your local bait shop he will be glad to stear you in the right direction and give you advice on how to use whatever he sells you.

When I moved to Alaska, I vlenteered to be a deckhand on a charter boat. I had tons of lake and great lakes salmon fishing experience, and found that the captain learned almost as much from me as I learned from him. I now have tons of fishing spots as he let me bring my gps with, and he is paying me good money this summer to run with him again. I also have access to the charter boat as long as it's not booked, and we frequently get out for fun. Give it a try, people generally like to have free employees even if they have to give you a little training.

Hey BSS, I've picked up "Fishing New England, a boaters guide to Cape Cod & the Islands" by Gene Bourue and "Complete Book of Baits, Rigs, & Tackle" by Vic Dunaway . and both have helped me a lot .....but I'm still posting the "Insert Big Fish Picture Here" square on my post too....lol peter
