Same issue on my 83 capri bow rider. traded the Chrysler 85 for a us marine 90.
I replaced the deck and carpet some years ago with 3/4 inch marine grade and coated it with spray on bed liner then re carpeted. I of course had to sand and grind out the seat stands that were molded in to the glass.

I dont remember what the strings (arent those the two pieces that run the length of the hull paralell to the ski locker?) looked like and now the little section of decking in the bow has rotted thru ( i didn't replace that section) but also the bow seat stands are starting to rot and the bow eye is pulling loose. So I am trying to decide if I want to rip it all up and to the strings ( i shudder to think about the transom) or do I do a patch job on the bow deck and bow eye ( any suggestions on the eye?) Or do I simply put down some new decking and cushions on top of the bow seats and prolong the inevitable??? suggestions?

I have never worked with fiberglass or gel coat. I have no idea how to replace the transom but I have been reading about how you have to remove the cap. Never done that before either... I am very much a do it yourself but I also know how impatient I can be... Also did anyone use nails or screws on the bow and stern seats or did the glass just glue everything in??? I can do it but I need more details about the grunt work.

Re: 1983 Bayliner Capri interior wood rot

I have been looking at all the other posts on similar bayliner projects but they tend to gloss over( NPI) the details. I bit the bullet and pulled up my "new" carpet and main deck that I put in 10 years ago. That board is still in good shape but I never stripped away the old decking underneath so that will have to go and the stringers ( isnt that what runs paralell to the ski locker?) is also complelty rotten. The foam up front seems dry but the wood is rotten so can I replace the wood and leave the foam in or should I just strip every thing down to the hull? Also I need advice on how to replace what I think are the stringers.

1. The foam may look dry but it is probably wet. I would always replace the foam as the new foam is closed cell, at least the 2 part foam is, and will not soak up water.
2. Drill into the stringers if the bit comes out dry fill with epoxy and thank GOD you do not have to replace them. If the woods wet well have fun with the stringers.
3. The floor is just glassed into the sides of the hull you can grin it out pretty easily.

Re: 1983 Bayliner Capri interior wood rot

I have my interior stripped but I Am concerned about the stringers. They appear solid except at the very rear of the bilge and one is a little rotten up front at the frame directly ahead of the ski locker... Can I remove the bad sections and cut then glass in replacement wood in the bad section only or do I have to replace the whole stringer? Also Are you folks putting cloth over the floor after you seal it and set it down then covering with epoxy or are you just sealing the deck and putting epoxy and cloth at the seams?

Rot is like cancer and will spread. If I was you, I'd replace the whole stringer.
