starter relay?

for some reason i can start my boat take it out all day , kill it, sit and hang out for awhile then get back in to start the boat but will not turn over..i have to get back there and move the starter relay or just mess with it then it will finally fire up and turn over. it is a volvo penta 3.0GS ..just wondering what is this? a short in a wire maybe? i am new to boating as well, so be generous haha

This could be a number of things, but I would say more than likely the solenoid. First make sure your battery is up to par, test it and make sure. Then, I would clean all connections at the battery & the starter solenoid. If the problem still persist, then I would replace the solenoid. If you have a voltmeter handy, take it with you next time you go out and when & if this happens again, test to see if voltage is leaving the solenoid on the wire going to the starter when in the cranking position.

thanks i dont know , it just gets aggravating really. i am taking tommorow to my cousin who is a mechanic and he is gona see what all gets power..tonight i cleaned all the connections, post, and all that, fired right up..to make sure wasnt a fluked..moved the starter relay and there it went ..nothing..thats why i dont know if its just a short in a wire so when you move it , it finally grabs a good connection or what?

ok turns out it was in the shifter i guess some kinda relay safety? starts fine when just in reg drive just when u put it in neutral for some reason it doesnt want to
