Hi everyone-- I just removed the floor on my 94 Bayliner Capri. I am putting down pressure treated 1/2 inch plywood and want to coat it with something that will keep the water away. Would fiberglass resin be ok to coat the plywood with? What would be a good top coat, other than carpet. Thanks in advance for your help.

You need to make sure the PT ply is throughly dry, and then coat both sides with fiberglass. If you are on a budget CSM and poly resin should do. If you haven't cut it up, glassed exterior grade ply is a good option for the floor instead.

Read up and see how its done. Was there any other rot in the boat? Wet foam?

Thanks Terry-- Stringers are dry and solid, foam is dry. What is CSM? Any thoughts on topcoating?

Re: waterproof coating

Good to hear the structure is there.

CSM is chopped strand mat. It is one of the reinforcing materials used with poly resin. It bonds well to wood, but is not the strongest or most impervious to water. It is used in a lot of factory boats beacues it is easy to work and cheap.

For a topcoat you have many options once it is glassed in. Paint, paint+antiskid, KiwiGrip, Duraback, gelcoat, carpet, vinyl. They all have their + and -. If you read thru the threads of restos that are near completion you will get lots of ideas. I am planning to roll in gelcoat to get me thru the summer, and maybe add snap in carpet or one of the non-skids (KiwiGrip or Durabak) next year.

Good luck deciding!
