How much is too much slack in 275

I'm finding more and more things wrong with my 275 drive. You guys have helped me through a lot. I've replaced u joints, bellows, orings, water neck to fix some problems. I've traced my air intrusion/overheating problem to the water neck gasket and possibly the bottom o-ring sealing the yoke to the lower gear box. My question is I have found about 1/8" play in the intermediate housing. Only up and down play no side to side. This small amount of play allows the yoke to turn inside of the bushings. Is this normal? I'm installing new lower gearbox o-rings tomorrow. My concern is over time this rotating yoke will wear out or cut the o-ring possibly allowing air into the raw water inlet.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks

I'm not sure if I'm following you. I think you are calling the suspension fork, the yoke. #9 in this link?

The pivot tube, #23, should not turn so there should be no wear on the lower oring.

The gasket under the intake fitting does turn with the suspension fork.

Clarify what is turning that shouldn't be or explain in better detail.:)

Re: How much is too much slack in 275

It's no telling where I got yoke from, what I mean is the pivot tube. The slack I see is between the suspension fork and intermidiate housing. The pivot tube seems to carry the intermediate housing along it's length, supported by bushings and a bearing. The slack is up and down. No side to side play which would indicate worn bushings and or tube. My pivot tube will spin freely with the upper and lower gear housings removed. I moved it down an inch just by sticking my thumb in it and pulling down. I'm worried that when I secure the lower with all these new o-rings I've bought it will rotate thus wearing out the lower pivot tube sealing o-ring. And water fitting gasket also. All of which are new. Perhaps when the lower box is tight to the intermediate housing the shoulder on the tube will "clamp" itself tight by the pressure the o-ring will hold. This will hold the tube tight in relation to the lower and intermediate housing which means the water fitting gasket with th o-ring will be stationary. One of the two must see movement if I'm thinking right. I'm getting all new Seals and o-rings and want no more issues. So I'm kinda obsessing over this o-ring deal. I can handle some slack but not air in my cooling system. As you well know like I'm learning air does not transfer heat in an engine!! Ha ha

Hmmmm..., I don't think the pivot tube is supposed to be that loose. I took mine apart last winter and I had to drive it out and back in at reassembly. It wasn't super tight but...

I don't know what to suggest. I guess once its assembled it should stay together but like you said, it can't leak air.

If it leaks I'm cutting a hole in the bottom of the boat and putting in a redneck straight pipe! With ball valve and scoop of course. :)

Ha ha! Really? That's too funny. I think it will be fine or at least I'll keep my fingers crossed! I'll let you know where I will place my scoop if it don't work

Mello, I did it, I cut hole in bottom of boat near transom, installed home made inlet. Boat runs and cools fine! Ha ha no more worries. After installing all new o-rings everywhere it still sucked air. Anyway with that overwith, have you seen anything like what I've done? Do you think I need a ball valve on it for safety?

Yes and yes. I had considered the same option at one time but was able to fix it. You want a valve right above the scoop. You could also put in a 'T' for running on land. Glad it's working for you. Post some pics of your setup.:)

Yes I was thinking a tee also, that was the only drawback I could think of. Not running on muffs. Your very familiar with the 275 so picture this. I didn't even cut theraw water hose I just twisted it around to fit my inlet. I need to plug the Volvo inlet for sure, I saw water rush in when I stopped quickly. Are there any other concerns you know of I should address?
