I have a 1990 Nissan 90A that needs a new water pump. I have everything loose on the lower unit, but can't get the shift rod loose. What kind of connection does it use at the top. Have taken Johnson off, but it is different and can't see how it works. Any help is appreciated. Just finished a carb rebuild and thought I would change water pump while I was working on it.

Thanks in advance

OK I finally found it. It is a two piece unit combines with a sleeve that has a pin to hold them together where the lower unit meets the housing. I just hammered out the pin and bingo it came right out.
Thanks anyway, Sometimes just look and you will find an acorn. Ha Ha.

That information is in your Factory service manual. So is info on servicing the water pump.

Just fixing to change my water pump on a 1990 90HP nissan of mine. All I need to do is unbolt the screws on the lower foot then knock that pin you are speaking of out? Any pics or help would be awesome. And any info. on carb rebuilds. My first ever boat:)

First, try to get a Factory service manual from a Nissan/Tohatsu dealer. That will show you a lot. Failing that, you can get a parts catalog online at Elvin's site, http://www.internetoutboards.com/PartsCatalogMenu.htm Yes, after you disengage the shifter and unbolt the LU, it can be taken down, exposing the water pump. I would recommend getting a WP kit, Part # 3B7873221M List Price (MSRP): $86.67, as this will include not just the impeller, but also the cup it rides in, the wear plate, drive key, and associated gaskets, etc.

Carb work is both a science and an art. If you are not at all familiar with the technology, better to find someone who is... perhaps a dealer. A multiple-carb motor will require synchronization of the carbs after carb work... again, best done by someone familiar with how it goes.
