Smart tabs...too stiff?

Hi

Im from Norway, and i've purchased a SX9510-40
to my 17" Quicksilver 510 with 60hp Mercury.

I just put it on the water after winterstorage.
So i havent tried it with the new smart tabs sx until now. I bought it from a netshop called Stop'n'Buy.

It works well for planing problem, but the 40lbs actuator seems to be way to stiff...i get a drop off 5mph on the top speed. I've tried it with and without. Also fuel economy has raised. And this is with the hole with less resistance.

seems like i need the green actuator(20lbs) ?

is there any GA5000-20 for the SX-series?

Its will cost me almost as a much as a new complete set to replace the actuators.....

What should i do?

Thanks

Terje from Norway

I have SmartTabs on my Mercury Inflatable too. The instructions recommend that you simply change the angle to reduce the drag. There should be no need to purchase new actuators. If you no longer have the instructions, they are available on-line.

Re: Smart tabs...too stiff?

Just a guess here, with a bit of experience, after putting them on my 16' last year. No improvement is absolutely free. You're inducing more drag in order to get a lower planing speed and quicker time to plane. The down side is, more drag, less speed for the same amount of power. I'd say if your planing speed is lower and your time to plane is lower, which will improve fuel economy and wear and tear on your drive train, since you can stay on plane at a lower power setting, you're doing pretty well with it only costing you 5mph in topspeed.

When Smart Tabs are adjusted properly and have the proper cylinders there should be no loss of speed, there really should be a slight gain in wot speed, at the worst no loss at all.

Re: Smart tabs...too stiff?

1) Send us an email and we will resolve the issue of getting you two GA5000-30 Actuators, the angle od deployment can not be changed on the SX series, but the pressure can be.

Before we change anything, answer the following questions:
1) Do you have a Hydrofoil on the motor - if so take it off. This would be the cause of the lower top speed as it is not recommended to have both the Tabs and the Hydrofoil.
2) Do you trim the motor "out" to vertical once you are on plane. This is the most efficient position. Leaving the motor down allows the prop to lift the back (driving the bow down) at an increasing rate as the speed increases.

Re: Smart tabs...too stiff?

Which you have as the hole closest to the boat, right?

Yes its positioned in the hole closest to the boat.

Ive tried to trim the engine in any position possible to improve topspeed, but it only reaches a maximum of 20.5 knots. And without any tabs easy 25+ knots.

The outboard is without any mods.

Will there be any difference with the 30lbs?

Hmmm, have I been thinking this backward? I thought the hole closest to the boat would be the MOST resistance, since it forces the tab down into the slipstream further. Is that incorrect?

Thanks.

Close to boat less pressure, further out more pressure.
