Water impeller part numbers: 96148A 8 vs 96148Q 8

Hi there,

On mercury parts express for my engine, the water impeller kit part number is
'96148A 8'. On some websites, I see the part number listed as '96148Q8'.

Is there a difference in these two impeller kits OR are they the same?

For instance a particular website says this about this part:

Fits all Merc/Mar 65hp 4-cyl) through V-6 outboards with short-vane impellers and fit Mercruiser I/R/MR/Alpha drives (S/N 2495186-OD469858)

Short-vane impeller?

I ask because my local mechanic once told me they had to reference a look up table because my engine was so old they had to figure out what the new part number would be today versus what is was when the engine was built (1990).

I don't want to buy the wrong impeller kit.

What I have found is you can buy the exact part or a part that can fit multiple years and engine sizes normally the part that fits multi year and engine cost more.. hope this helps

That's an interesting statement, so these parts are fairly generic over multiple years and models.


Well, I feel silly anyways. Even though I quoted the text I guess I just didnt realize that there was a serial number range and my engine falls within it.

It might be more expensive by a little bit but getting the exact part straight from mercury is $50.

merc has a good return policy if it isn't the right one... as long as you didn't try to install it. Just take note of the direction of the viens when you take it out to make sure you twist them the right direction. I always suggest taking a picture before you pop it out of the housing.
