Eska 15hp - another electrical question

First time here for me.

I have an early 80's Eska 15hp, model #14211, with no spark. I know the news is grim but my question is this:

How do you test the various components to know which one is bad? I'm not really sure what they're all called.

It looks like it starts under the flywheel with the 1). Ignition Module (also called stator or Magneto?)" 2). Then there appear to be the low idle and high idle coils. 3). Then the Transformer coils?

Are there other components in the ignition system?

Anyway, how do you test these to find out the culprit?

thanks, Jeff

Re: Eska 15hp - another electrical question

Thank you for the info. Maybe you can help me interpret what I've done so far.

If I set my multimeter to DC10 and connect to the 2 poles on the back of the kill switch, then crank the motor I get 5-6 volts.

If I connect the multimeter to the wire going to the upper coil (that feeds the upper spark plug) I get about 2 volts. On the lower coil I don't get anything.

Here's a pic showing the parts labeled per my manual. (not sure which is high speed and which is low speed coil)

Thoughts?

I'm not a elctronics guru but I know some who are and those things you call coils, not the high speed or low speed ones...the ones that have the park plug wire....there pulse transformers, start there, here's a link that could help you out, you might even ask the ole boy for some testing advice. those SSI's moduals seem to fail because of the C1 capacitor so I'm told, the pulse transformer's fail due broken wire.
although Ed's site deals with the single cylinder tecumseh ssi all the principles should appy to your setup.

I have the same 15hp. It had no spark when I got it. I removed magneto assembly, and loosened/retightned all of the connections. Then I had spark (and still do). Here is a video of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lC_2iXDuJg

You guys are awesome. Got it cleaned up, new plugs, fired right up and runs great! Now I have 2 other problems.

1. Not peeing -probably impeller - or just plugged water tube.
2. Won't keep running - probably fuel pump - it will keep running as long as I keep the bulb tight.

Where exactly is the fuel pump? The line goes straight into the carb...

Re: Eska 15hp - another electrical question

The fuel pump is a rubber bladder that is inserted into the carburetor from the rear of its mounting flange. There is a flapper valve (looks like a gasket) under the fuel inlet flange.

Things like this is why you need a factory manual for your outboard. The bladder and flapper valve are available at the sources you've already been told about.
