I will be looking at a boat a friend is interested in buying, and the seller put a brand new drive one. He states the gimbal ring needs replaced becuase it has slop. How hard is this, and is it expensive?

Parts will be in the $500-$600 range assuming that the gimbal ring is all that's wrong and you get a good used gimbal ring. A new gimbal ring is over $500 by itself. If you're paying a shop to do it figure 8 hours labor at $100/hour if they do it the cheap way with the "frankenstein" plugs in the transom shield. Only other way to do it is pulling the motor, figure a couple of days labor if you go that route.

With an Alpha 1, there is a very good chance that all it needs is to have the gimbal ring clamping screws (two bolts with nuts on backside at top of gimbal ring) retorqued to 50-55 ft. lb. Try it and see what happens. You can remove a surprising amount of slop just by tightening those bolts. Can't hurt! Good luck.
