The larger motors don't normally have an adjustment screw or needle, the jetting is fixed.

What makes you think its running rich?

Re: Idle / Low speed screw on 88 SPL

i have a 1996 88 spl and it DOES in fact have an idle screw. i dont have a picture at the moment but when i find one i can show you where it is.

so i wasnt able to find a pic of an 88 but basically its the same. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=303511
what you wanna look for is a flat head screw that is connected to the throttle linkages. when you tighten it it advances the throttle, back it out and it does the opposite. itll be pretty easy to see because its basically a screw that is butted up against some type of stationary bracket.

make sure you are in the water when you adjust it because you need the backpressure of the water to set it correctly.

------------

sorry i jumped the gun with the idle speed, you were looking for carb adjustment. i figured if i already typed it up then ill just leave it up there. here you go, i think htis is what you wanted.

The idle adjustment screw and an idle mixture screw are to very different things. The OP is looking for the idle mixture screw. That is if the question is actually about it running rich at idle or very low speed.

Based on this comment and the picture above... the idle jetting is #7 and cannot be leaned out unless I get a smaller jet?

Yes, the jet needs to be changed.

What makes you think it needs to be re-jetted though? Sometimes the jetting isn't perfect, but its normally good enough to not create issues, are you at high altitude.

Engine runs ok but if left at idle for any period of time it fouls plugs. Oil coming out exhaust and black plugs... Maybe thats just the nature of these things. I only have experience with motorcycle and snowmobile 2 strokes and with plugs like that and fuel/oil in exhaust I would be leaning out the slow idle circuit for sure.

What plugs are you using, are the floats adjusted correctly, is the thermostat working correctly, how do you typically run the motor, have you de-carbed it recently?

de-carbed it last weekend so I will find out for sure this weekend if that helped. The carbs need torn apart for sure so it could be a float issue and in need of cleaning.

I was hoping to take the easy road for now and just lean it out a bit.

We are both typing too fast and posting before the other person responds, LOL.

I would say it could be a couple of things other than jetting unless you are at high altutude.

Changing the jetting won't compensate for leaky float needles, wrong heat range plugs, or bad thermostats.

Cleaning the carbs is very easy and doesn't take long to do.

2,000 ft could start to effect it, but make sure eveything else is correct before changing the jets. I don't have the link, but they do have recommended jetting for high locations.

All good info... and fast!

Just checked on the elevation and its 2400'. I'll pull the carbs and check/clean everything the next chance I get.
