1978 Chrysler 70hp - Feels like it is popping out of gear

I have a 1978 Chrysler 70hp that seems to run very well. I start rights up and takes off no problem. The area of concern is that when I start to get up to speed, the tranny feels like it is kicking out of gear and then immediately popping right back in. It almost feels like you are hitting something in the water. It feels too hard to be a misfire, unless all of the cylinders are misfiring at the same time. You can feel it pretty well in the boat. I have taken the lower unit apart and did a gear oil change. Everything in the lower unit looks brand new like it has no wear on it at all. No metal shavings or anything when I took it apart. It has been doing this for sometime and seems to be getting worse now. Ideas on the problem, and how to fix it. I love the way the motor runs. It has never left me stranded yet, and I dont exactly baby it. Anyone know someone around N. Ky that is good with these things. I am a good mechanic, but not a lot of experience with outboards.

It could be a worn clutch. There is another thread here somewhere about it so try a search. One chap said he took the clutch to a machine shop and machined the surfaces - good as new.

If you are still looking at fixing that 75hp, I have a new complete lower gearcase assy., which has all gears and propshaft assembled in housing. My email is bayouboatdoctor@aol.com

Thanks
