Hello, all

I have 1964 Evinrude 28 hp 2 cylander. Got it for free restored it. Anyway.
I do not get spark on bottom cylander until I disconnect a kill switch wire, I think, the wire is from set of point to the right side of engine by the intake port, when the key at on position that terminal has 12v.

Now I am able to start the motor and verified by disconnect plug wire one at the time. It runs now. But I do not know what part do I need to replaceto be able to turn off the motor? and where is the kill switch is? that wire seem to be grounged all the time.

please help, any advice will be appreciated. by the way, Model# 28402M
Thank you. I bought service manual from iboat 1956 to 70 does not show detail.

Re: how to go about kill switch?

Thank you for reply sir, that was very helpfull.

So it is shorting switch assy. so can I just replace it with updated landyard one? Does it come with wiring instructions? because,it is 3 pins switch,
so I need to run longer wire to front close to control box, is that right?

I think, I should be able figerit out, Iam a very handy person and electronic Tech. thank you, so much for info.

The cut-out switch is something other than a kill switch.

For discussions, use the advanced forum search function to search "cutout switch" with F_R user name.

The cut-out switch (in picture) if malfunctioning. will prevent the bottom cylinder from firing. It will ground out bottom cylinder points if vacuum is applied to the hose attached to it. Test it with an ohmmeter. There should be no continuity between the terminals normally. If you apply vacuum to the hose, you should get continuity. If you have continuity with no vacuum applied, then the switch is bad (and the bottom cylinder won't fire). A wire from that cut-out switch goes on to the ignition switch "M" terminal. The other "M" terminal wire goes directly to the top cylinder set of points. When the ignition switch is off, the two sets of points are grounded together. That is your kill switch.

Re: how to go about kill switch?

Updated, I can not find a kill switch where should be. There is blck wire with white strip from key witch is 12v when switch at on position and my bottom condensor blck wire is connected to that 12v wire. looked like someone removed it. Or it is some where else. I was so exited to look into it, but it is not there.

Can I add universal kill switch to that 12v line ignition switch? keep that 12v open from that terminal on a side of the engine? close the switch when I want to stop an engine. any advice, thank you.

You must not have 12 volts going to the kill circuit (to the points/condenser). It will Fry your coils:eek:

Re: how to go about kill switch?

The kill switch on that motor and the cutoff switch are two different things. The first thing I would suggest it make sure you have the right key switch. There are two types. One for a magneto style ignition which is the one you need and one for a more modern 12v ignition. The fact that you have 12v back there leads me to believe you have the wrong key switch. The kill switch on that motor is very simply. It simply connects the two sets of points grounding each one out and killing the motor. The ignition on that is such that all the key switch does is put 12v to the solenoid to fire the starter. The only place you should have 12v on it is at the solenoid and only when the key is in the start position. It does look as if you have an electric choke possibly but that has nothing to do with the ignition system and would operate on that motor on a push button switch not through the key switch.

Re: how to go about kill switch?

The ignition switch come withthe boat like that, not sure how many terminals. last time I pull that out to hook up volt mtr to it, It has accessory terminal on it. yes it has electric choke.

I beliefe, the cut out swtch is mulfuction. before I had spark and sometimes weak spark on bottom cylander.
I ohm it out,it read high like komh without blck wire from condensor, with condensor wire connected to it, willread low or continuity.

I still wonder why. This morning I ran it again still runing good, but have turn it off by choking it. thank you very much for your time.. I might add land yard swtch or or keep checking cut out swtch once in a while see if it is intermittent.
