Hello and thanks to all before I begin.

I have a 1957 Johnson 10hp model no is QD-18. (found on forums searches)

I have the motor running now after it was setting for God only knows how long. After cleaning the carb and new plugs.

I know that the top needle is the slow speed adjustment (found on forum searches)

I know that the bottom needle is the high speed adjustment (found on forum searches)

From what I have read here on the forums. I need to adjust the high speed first with it in gear at full throttle.
When I put the thing in gear and full throttle, it sloshes the water over the barrel. The water gets so low that my pee-hole stops peeing.

Can I take the prop off and adjust it that way. But if I do, there is no load on the motor.

Also have a question about the gas/oil mix. I found out that the mix should be 24:1 (found on forum searches)

At that mix there is a LOT of smoke. Should there be that much smoke?

Any thoughts,

Re: Adjust Carb/Barrel empty

Well, you have learned the limitations of the barrel. The smoke will dissipate on a boat and it will be way easier to adjust the HS mixture there. You can't do it in a barrel, only a proper test tank, which is impractical for the average person to build.

24:1 is right for that motor, as I recall. Using synthetic TCW3 oil will probably result in somewhat less smoke.

Thanks Jim.

That wasn't the answer I wanted to hear, but sometime the truth hurts. :)

Thanks again,
