Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

I didnt find diagrams for the boat specific but there are manuals that
have the wiring diagrams for the motor which is 99% of it.
manuals are in the adults only area
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=288430
you will find one of the manuals that covers that year and motor
just cant remember which one it was. (I think it should be there)

Yep - got the 165 manual downloaded from that link before I bought the boat.
Thanks for the reminder.

Yesterday I drove past the boat to check on her and noticed the recent rain had caved in the tarp and created a huge pool of rain water inside the tarp, inside the boat. Way more than I wanted to pump out with the hand operated bilge pump. The electric bilge pump is in the boat - under the tarp, behind the motor shroud - inaccessible. Went to Fleet Farm, bought a new bilge pump (1200 gph) and a "real" cover with a center pole to hold up the cover. I was relieved to see how quickly the new bilge pump emptied the pool from inside the boat. Nice to know if I hit bad weather I can pump a lotta water out in a hurry. Took pictures, but those will have to wait for now, I'm sleepy.

Here's the manufacturer's picture:

and here's the exact one I got:
Fleet Farm

I'm very impressed with the fit considering how high the windshield rises above the cabin on this boat. I have the step-down model of cover from this same company for my 14-footer - it's at least four years old and it's held up VERY well and survived many, many miles on the highway. So I'm expecting this one to hold up at least as well. For a hundred bucks, I think that's a hell of a deal. More importantly, with a good cover on the boat I can now start investing time and effort on the interior and hope to actually protect the investment.

Plus I have a cool new bilge pump

I picked up a Classic Accessories size "D" for my starcraft holiday
got it at walmart I think it was about 150.00 and I have to say it fits
good and the material seems good I was wondering how it would hold
up on the hiway..
I feel a little better about it now that i see you have had one of these
on the hiway with out any problems.
i will know in about a week when i haul my boat 10 hours how it holds up.

Hey Paparoof.. see the label next to your shift/throttle.. the one about NOT using NO-LEAD or UNLEADED Fuel ??? You may want to either see about getting a Newer head or getting Hardened Exhaust Valve Seats installed in the Cylinder head. I run a newer head, I dont know if Lead Additives are still available, I had a couple cans from a closed marina, but gave them to someone.

Also, My 1974 has the same, Check your Fuel Lines Before Aug 1 1975 Sticker, I was wondering about the year.. thanks.

You mean this sticker? I was wondering what this was about. What is the story behind this? My boat is supposedly a 1975 but I don't know exactly when it was built/sold, what was so magical about the date August 1, 1975?

And I'm with you on the leaded gas thing. Leaded gas is available here, but obviously, unleaded would make it far easier to gas this thing up. So that's been one of the factors in my muddling over this engine issue. Like if I just send $1550 to rapidomarine (they said $1400 for the 165 longblock, plus $150 shipping) I could presumably put that in myself and run unleaded gas - right? Or should I not even assume that?

Think I can disassemble the carb and clean it up myself for reuse on a "new" motor? I've never taken apart a carb, but I can take apart the action in my .22 rifle down to every last individual part and put it back together again - (if I have the right pictures in front of me). Is a carb any more difficult than that?

The rapido deal you mention above is a no-brainer to me.

Carb vs the innards of ANY 22 rifle..
Carb wins hands down for difficulty..one spring, one jet screwed 1/1000th's too tight and damaged..one iota of debri..your carb will give you fits..keep you up at night in a cold sweat...as you try to retrace what went together wrong over and over in your head till you take it to a shop and in 5 minutes they say..Ohhhhh...this do hickey here goes like THIS..

LOL carb is super easy i did the 2 barrel in less than half an hour,
it had a little water damage from water going down it but it was a easy
rebuild, i didnt really do a full rebuild just took it apart removed the kets
blew out the passages and jets, cleaned out the float chambers
then put a kit to it with new accelerator pump and ball and all new gaskets.
almost any auto parts store can get you the kit and there are good instructions in the box.
runs 100% :)

Motor looks good . Raw water cooled so no heater . Everything looks clean and I have had two 165s in glasply glass boats and they run well and fairly fast. Much quicker on a aluminum hull.

Heck. If you can see and hear it run, that takes just about all of the risk out of it, IMO. It's close to you (I think) so you wouldn't have to make a big investment in getting it. Not too hard to drop in as a lump. Hmm.

The only question is whether you think $900 is a fair price. As I recall, rebuilding you current motor was gonna be closer to $1,500? I've seen some other used ones in various states of health in the $500-$750 range. But this one can be seen running and looks to have good compression. Hmm.

Go for it.

Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

hmmm indeed....

today my thoughts are occupied by buying this motor and dropping it in - as is. Assuming that works out, run the boat for the summer, get used to it, fiddle with the interior. I'll keep the current motor for parts, and think about getting the head, manifold and block cleaned up and rebuilt one at a time, because each one by itself would bolt right onto this new motor, should I have a problem with it. Then once all the parts are rebuilt (maybe as much as a year or two down the road) then do another motor swap and put the original back in.

This is fun to mull over.

You may be mulling while somebody else is mowing..

If I had the coin to drop, that 165 would be in my garage:D

Just called the guy again and made a date to go look at it on Tuesday evening!

So CBKev, ya got 4 days to scrape up the cash, drive a couple thousand miles round trip to steal it out from under me. Of course if you did, it'd probably fly off your trailer into a field on your way home....
