Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

The two transom boards took a LOT of CPES. I bet it's more than two quarts total. But they're now mostly cured and the sticky is just about gone (it's been uber-humid here this week). I'll probably epoxy them together this weekend.

One more thought about CPES - if you use this stuff, GET THE MASK. I did everything in a one-car garage, but the garage door was open and the fan was right next to me, blowing out. Didn't matter. The next day I still felt like I had drank a case of beer the night before. FULL-ON hangover. I'll be getting a mask before I use any more of this stuff.

10 yards of 10 oz. fiberglass cloth and 1 gallon of thin epoxy (w/ medium hardener) are on their way. Ordered them yesterday from US Composites.

Got the all the floors out tonight and strapped to the roof of my car right before the rain came hammering down. No time for pictures, the weather was rolling in and I had to move fast.

Also took measurements for the center section of the under-floor belly, hoping to find a used fuel tank that'll hold 40+ gallons and fit under the floor. Wish me luck. Maximum dimensions seem to be in the area of 80" long, 22" wide with a max center depth of about 8" at the rear, 9" in the front.

C'mon CL... Papa needs a gas tank....

coolness on making big headway on a Major Gumption Trap! once you have that transom done, the rest of the boat will seem like cake.

Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

It's been very slow progress lately, scattered rain showers in and out almost every night this week, so I haven't been able to work on the boat for more than an hour at a time. The weather is supposed to settle down for the weekend so hopefully I'll be able to make some serious progress.

Last night I got the three floor pieces traced and cut out, they're now in the garage waiting for CPES. I'm waiting for nice weather so I can apply it out in the driveway in the fresh air.

Tonight I got the last of the floor pieces out and all but one big chunk of foam broken up and into garbage bags. Just gotta get the cabin walls out and clean everything and I'll be ready to start re-assembling the boat!

Oh and I cracked open my very first ever home brew tonight and low and behold... it was delicious!

I know I've really been slacking on the pictures lately, my apologies. Here's a couple new ones.

The floor boards after cutting them out the other night:

oh by the way, outdoors is definitely the way to go with this CPES stuff. I went through 40 oz. of the stuff to coat the bottoms and edges of the floor boards, and nary a hint of a headache.

Got some errands to run now and when I get back I'll flip the boards and do the top sides.

Look at that! He has a deck! Nice man! You better find a tank quick, eh. Have you been scanning eBay some?

Cheers!

Yeah, lookin at CL and Ebay - several times a day in fact. I'm starting to resign myself to the idea of above deck fuel tanks. :(

Hey the JB Weld website has "fuel tanks" listed on their website. Tell me why I can't just clean off the rust from the bottoms of the tanks I already have, and spackle them with JB?

I may just try it anyway, I already have the tanks and I already have a bunch of JB so it won't cost me anything.

i'm a great believer in JBweld, having fixed some really bizarre stuff with it....even reconstructed a sportbike engine side cover once, incl tapping threads into it...still holding last time i saw the bike.

the issue i see is that unless you design a trap door into your deck, the fix has GOTTA be perfect since you won't be able to easily remove it. maybe get some small scraps of sheet metal and use the JB to glue them in place over the bad spots after you clean latter to bare metal?

Hey Papa! I bet your life and you familys is well worth a few bucks for a NEW GAS TANK. I really would not fix a (hope is not leaking) gas tank and use it. On the water there is no real escape from a fire except in the drink. I see boats in the Seattle area all summer that are burned to the water line or sank. If it even takes longer to pick up a new tank its well worth it.

wise words Puget...the more i think about it, the less i like the idea of a JBweld fix on an underfloor gas tank. not least because it seems the volatile solvents used as octane booster in modern gas eat even stuff that was impervious to what we used to think of as "gas"

Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

ps.. the bow end is snug, had to use a little foot/leg muscle to seat it, but it does have a blanket of Roofing rubber underneathm which isn't very thin.. so I dont think I have the proper allowance for expansion up front but.. alum flexes right ? right ???

pss.. can't wait to see a pic of you on your new ROCK Solid Dance Floor !!
