Changed out the impeller last May (2009)
Ran the motor late March this year (2010) on the muffs to check things out. All was well and pumping fine. Been away on business trips a lot recently so have not yet had our first splash of the season. This morning showed it to be a perfect boating day. About to hang the trailer on the Jimmy when something just told me to fire her up before we left. Guess what ?? not pumping a drop of water from the tell tale. Well we did not get to go boating today but we did not fry the motor either !!!
This is a one year old impeller with about 30 hours on it. It has never been started or even cranked over without the muffs hooked up. I have spent the day so far ripping apart the entire cooling system. Initially thought the stats were giving trouble, checked them out but all was well. Opening at around 145 degrees. Cleaned all cooling hoses by removing and blowing out with compressed air, removed elbow fittings and did the same. Removed water control valve and found no issues (there will be another post on that one shortly) Found it hard to believe that it would be the impeller but yes it was !!
Will be changing it out annually after seeing this. Couple of hours work for peace of mind. After messing around with everything else I ran it without the stats for a minute and nothing, then ran it with the stat covers off and still nothing.....that's when I moved downstairs and took off the lower unit.
Be warned everyone, if I had ignored this I would have been a few minutes from a fried motor !!!!
The bonding of the rubber to the drive bushing came completely away. Key is still good as is the shaft.
New parts in the morning and hopefully out on the lake this coming week.:)

Ken.

Was the part installed last May OEM or aftermarket? Just curious. From what I can see, I'd consider that a defective part not normal wear and tear.

Ouch ... I've had problems like you had with aftermarket stuff, but never with BRP/OMC.

Looks like Wild beat me to the same question. I'm glad you answered OEM (I'm running an aftermarket impeller right now).

Wow, i'm an OEM man too, that's insane . You should contact BRP and get their take on it, it shouldn't have failed after 30 hours.

I meant to use the other camera with the sound but battery was dead. Had to use the one I have for work. No sound on that one. I actually prefer that as when I am shooting video's of the tooling etc at the plants you can not hear some of the plant people "whining" about the extra work they now have to do !!! :D:D:D

You sure you didn't install it wrong or something? Run through some sand ONCE??

That's not normal.....I always keep my eye on the temp gauge.

No sand, ran fine last season and at first fire up this year. I think it must have just been it's "time"

Is the pee stream supposed to be that weak and take that long to start? I am new to boat motors but mine shoots a stream about 8 feet if the motor is tilted up a bit and starts as soon as the motor fires. I am not trying to be a SA just trying to understand better.

If it was myself I would call BRP about this. 1-847-689-7090 and talk to them. OMC had a problem with this same thing some years back but so far I've heard nothing about the prob now. And yes, I still work on them part-time.

For this type of motor with the water control valve I am very satisfied with the stream. These motors have a bigger bore outlet than a lot of others that diffuses the stream somewhat. If you narrow the outlet hose the stream gets stronger. It will take a while to fill up the system before it comes out of the tell tale. There is a fair amount to fill up in a V4 Looper.
Thank you for your concern and by the way what motor do you have ??
