Hey everyone,

Cruising across the lake last night full speed suddenly the motor lost its thrust but was still running fine. Its like it slipped into neutral. At very low speed it will run and move across the water slowly, but when I give it throttle it winds up as its not in gear. Let it idle back down and it will move.. albeit slowly.

It has the Forward Neutral Reverse shifter and I was hoping for pointers before I start to tear into her.

I rotated the prop by hand and can hear some nasty grinding in the prop housing so I am assuming clutch dog/gears are shot. Any tips on replacing the clutch dog, or at least how to get to it. Do I need to remove the whole lower unit, or just the prop housing?

Are you sure the prop hasn't spun it's hub? A clutch dog will keep trying to go into gear with a loud bang. It feels like you hit something. Make sure your prop is OK before you go digging in to the lower unit.

Twin City Outboard in Shakopee Minnesota has a ton of old stuff. I priced a clutch dog for a 1960 Evinrude 10 horse. The used ones were junk (according to them) the new ones were $114. I turned mine around but have not tested yet.

90 percent that it is a spun prop.
Use a permanent marker and mark a line across the inner hub and outer prop. Run it in the water again, and I'll bet the lines are no longer lined up.

Andy, you hear nasty grinding while turning by hand? Oh-oh. Big trouble inside.

pretty basic system inside of there.

What hp is this thing?

you might just want to buy a lower off ebay.

take it apart and see what broke, most people would advise against flipping it over, but I say go for it.

Thanks for all the feedback, I will drop the lower end and take it apart and see whats going on. It sounds very nasty when turned by hand... grinding for sure.

Once it is apart I will post back some pics and take it from there.

Thanks guys,

It is a spun prop! Yeah. I did however remove the lower unit expecting to rebuild all, but no problem. I feel better seeing whats going on inside v.s. guessing.

That grinding sound is the brass center rubbing against the turning prop. Any suggestions prop wise?

Also I hear conflicting reports on trying to seal lower units but rather stock up on gear oil and fill up each time out. The shaft seal below the impeller is definitely leaking. There is oil up the shaft and covering the impeller housing.
Big deal? or Don't worry, make sure the oils full?

Is it possible to replace that seal without removing the prop gears?

Take it to a prop shop or a Johnnyrude dealer (they will probably send it out) and have it re-hubbed. $40-50 around my neck of the woods.

Thanks. I took the gear housing apart because it would not hit neutral after removing lower unit. Then I realized the u shaped clutch slider that attaches to the shift rod was off. The y bracket that holds it in was seperated apart. A little clamp action and test for fit and it went back together nicely. Now I will have reverse again and the knowledge that the gears are FINE. I turned the clutch dog too while there. A tiny bit rounded on the very edge, but nothing major

Well that should do it for this motor. Lol. Top to bottom except for a new head gasket. Hopefully that'll hold for a while.....

Thanks so much guys!
