My father just gave me his old boat and I dug an old 7.5 hp evinrude Fleetwin out of my grandafther;s barn to run on it. The motor has been sitting a long time and i got it to start, but i noticed a bronish/whitish oil in the water after running it in a barrel.....when i lifted it up ther was a small hole on the side of the lower unit opposite the prop under where the lower unit bolts on and it was oozing the oil out and it felt like ther was some grit in the oul as well....is this hole supposed to be here? how do I fix this? also I need a new starting cord as the rope on the oputside of the cable of the one That is on there is coming off and making the cord not want to wind up again...where can i get a new cable?

If the hole looks like a factory drilled hole, it is for water to drain out of the housing. Since the motor's exhaust is water cooled, unburned oil will build up in the housing and seep out too....this is normal!

To be certain, check the quality & level of the gearcase oil. Replace the oil if you have not done so already...creamy tan oil means water has gotten into the gearcase and seals will need to be replaced.

Since the motor has been sitting, you're going to need to replace the water pump before you fry the powerhead. The pump commonly fail when they been sitting. Likewise, they should be replaced every couple of years.

Does the cord have an inner metal core? If not, you should be able to go to your local marine shop for replacement.

You also want to make sure that those little drain holes stay clean. If they plug up with debris, water can get trapped in the lower unit housing and crack it, when it freezes.

the cord is rope on the outside an metal cable inside....where can I get a replacement for that....I can't tell if the hole is intentional or not...it doesn't look perfectly round , but I dont know how it would have gotten there if it wasnt intentional....there is a fair amount of oil and I do believe it is of the milky tan variety... it as for the pump it took a little while to get going, bu *** was moving some water....where do I get a replacement pump and how do I install that? what should i expect to pay for one?

A weep hole will be milky because it is exhaust oil mixed with water...gearcase oil should not be! When you drain the gear oil to check, replace the washers each time on the drain plugs.

Sea-Way marine in Seattle should have the pump...they may also have the rope. I'm kinda looking for a replacement wire rope too, so let us know if you find a good source!

okay sounds good....I pulled the plug on that bottom fin and no oil at all came out....just water...but it seamed like that other milky oil/grease stuff was still oozing a little from that small hole...and the small hole is higher up on the motor than the fill hole for the lower unit....If I take a picture of the hole will you be able to tell if it is supposed to be there? also it seamed like a good constant oozing from that small hole...is it normal for that much to come out?

Only water from the gearcase drain plug is bad! What you do next is dependent on how much you want to get into it. I would disassemble the gearcase and inspect the condition of gears, shaft, etc. When the water entered the case will indicate how bad the gears are. If water has sat in the case for many years...do not be hopeful. If the the water entered from recent running, the gears might be good. If by chance they're OK...then re-seal the case.

Others may just refill the LU with oil after each time of usage.

Post any numbers you find on the motor...is there an ID plate?

also i removed the 4 bolts that appear to be holding on the lower unit and oi pulled the lower unit down and it came down an inch or so and stopped...is there something els i need to do before it will come off or do i need to apply more force? what's the trick there?

Do Not Force! My info tells me that the "powerhead must be removed in order to gain access to the shift rod lock screws." So basically, the shift rod (which is buried in the housing) is holding up the removal of the lower unit. This makes the job a bit more complicated, so you'll need to decide how deep you want to go. Definitely, you'll want to get a manual so you're not flying blind.

Sorry, I do not know of any tricks...but maybe there are.
