We have a 2001 Chaparral with a 5.7 GXi A engine. It has just over 100 hours on the engine, and has worked very well until now. We changed the impeller at around 90 hours.

Before taking it out last weekend, i thought i would attach the muffs to the outdrive and get it warmed up at home first. It had been used without problem about 2 weeks earlier so I didnt expect any problems. After running in the driveway for about 10 minutes, the temperature got up to about 180degrees, so I shut it down. I forgot to lower the leg before starting it, so I guessed the hose in the outdrive may have been kinked. I opened the impeller and the fins had all broken off. The casing around the impellor also got hot and changed color. So i got a new impellor and casing. Before installing them i flushed the hose from the Tstat to the raw water pump to remove any bits of impellor.

I then went to flush the hose from the out drive to the the impellor. I connected the muffs to the outdrive, but, there is no flow at the raw water intake hose. I tried to turn the water pressure to full and squeeze the muffs tight, but still nothing. I brought the garden hose in the boat and flushed into the intake hose at the raw water pump, and water comes out of the intake holes at the outdrive. I again connected the muffs to the outdrive, but water still does not come out the hose at the raw water pump. I went back and forth several times, but water only travels in one direction, from the pump intake hose back to the intake holes on the out drive. I tried to turn the wheel side to side, and tilt the out drive up and down several times with no luck.

I have looked through the "overheating diagnosis" manaul, but no luck. Any help on this would be very much appreciated.

Others will probably respond, but the lack of water on muffs may not be indicative of anything. When I hook muffs up to mine, no water flows out the back of the drive until I run the motor.

Why did your impeller fail after only 10 hours?

Good luck!

Water isn't making it from the muffs to the raw water pump. I can see this because the intake hose at the pump is off. But water flows in the other direction as fast as it comes out of the garden hose.

Thanks

You just can't seal the muffs tight enough to force the water UPHILL through all the turns.

I tightened the muffs and then also put one hand on each side and squeezed them together. From the force of the water leaking out I could tell there was a lot of pressure.

I was wondering if there is some sort of valve between the intake and raw water pump?
