The boat I just got has 2 very good and new car batteries

How much life will I get out of them before I need to put
Deep Cycle Batteries

Or should I just put the Deep Cycle Batteries on my shopping list now

Re: quick battery question

Car batteries are just fine, an i/o has an alternator just like your car does and the battery doesn't know the difference.
A deep cycle battery is made to be slowly dischaged and recharged, like say running an electic trolling motor all day, then recharging it back up. You do not need a deep cycling battery for an i/o starting battery because the engine alternator maintains it at full charge, in fact a deep cycle battery would probably have a shortened lifespan in an i/o starting battery application.

As long as you treat them with respect, keep a charger on them, don't run a TON of loads off them at any given time, keep them clean, corrosion at a minimum, they'll last you at least 3 years. Maybe 5, depending on the construction.

The difference is to great for me to discuss, as it's a long, boring treatise about thicker plates, higher antimony, and all that happy horses***. Do a search here and you'll find all the info you need with out having to type anymore...

Asking for advice here is a pretty risky endeavor. Awful lot of "good enuf" and "git-r-done" making the signal/noise pretty bad.

So you ask advice here, and you ask at THT, reelboating, floridasportsman, theprolineguy..., classicwhatever, and then you weigh all the advice you were given, and make your own decision. It's not like you paid for anything...

Re: quick battery question

Ask questions, I do, I ask a LOT. I get ignored, laughed at, one guy told me I was a jerk, but I do get answers, sometimes a lot or maybe just enough to help me think in another direction.

To take advice without double checking (research research research) is not too clever. but to listen (read) what is presented to you then use the knowledge to come to your own conclusion is what forums are all about-this place is a gold mine

And I thank everyone who has given me input-including you Shife

Re: quick battery question

Since no one has asked......... What are the batteries being used for? This has a huge impact on the correct answer to your question.

They are in a 1995 sailfish 176 cc

actually there is not much electrical on the boat - 2 bilge pumps (auto and manual) 2 pumps for the fore and aft live wells, VHF, hummingbird fish finder/GPS and running lights. well of course they need to start the motor. If I get a year out of them I will be happy ;)

If you're only expecting a year out of them I'd say you're all set.

This is geared toward larger boats, but a good read:

Re: quick battery question

Awesome article, thank you

Most of my fishing will be in the ocean, so the motor will be running a lot (hard to anchor in 600 feet) I plan to keep them on a very low trickle when I am not using the boat. Hopefully they will last one or two seasons, it will save me a couple of hundred bucks I can use for more necessary repairs and upgrades

I think you'll be fine. When they crap out, get a marine starting battery. If you want a second battery to run accessories, get a deep cycle.

Sage advice never would have thought about one of each

Thank you
