New guy here, 2 questions on impeller change in a 1985- 85hp Force o/b.

1: If I went to a local boat shop, what would I expect to pay to have them change the impeller start to finish?

2: If I decide to try it myself (don't know much about o/b motors), What is the basic cost of an impeller? OK- I just looked it up on this site (should have checked there first), $11.99

Thanks, MAXX

The impeller is about $20 a dealer would cost about $150.
It's easy to repair yourself. Get a manual and do it yourself. Also change the oil while your at it.Make sure you don't remove the pin on the side of the drive. It drains from the bottom.and fills from the side.J

Well Jerry, You've talked me into doing it myself.....$11.99 do it myself in driveway VS $150 have dealer do it.... I do think I'll give it a shot. I have already printed out the do it yourself sticky thread. Should I get a manual as well?

The basic impeller is about $11.99, but you most likely will need the entire kit which consits of new bolts, housing, and impeller. Last time I bought an entire kit it was over $60.00.

Changing the impeller is not a difficult job. You will need another set of hands to get the lower unit back on, I did anyway.

go to sticky "impeller replacement" one of the top threads on this page. follow instuctions & you will be fine. easy job, i did it, so it's easy! get a new gasget that goes Under the SS plate below the impeller. scrap the old one off clean to give a good seal. impeller, gasget & silicone seal (pretty sure it was silicone) cost me about 25 bucks. the seal is for the bolts going back in. makes them easier next time coming out.

I ordered mine from BoatingSolutions.com

You can find other ones there too for the bigger motors. I ordered 2 of these just in case one goes bad later on down the road.

You should check it out. pretty cheap prices.

$20 impeller, $40 manual, 45 minutes.

Around here, they charge $100.
Well worth it if you don't want to get dirty.

Not that I don't want to get dirty, or don't think I can do it, but I got a price of $65.00 at a local boat repair shop that everyone uses around here. He's well known & I was just stopping in to get a price, (I thought would be $150 or higher at this place), & he said $65 & I can have it done in less than an hour. I said, "I'll see you Thursday". Sorry to all the gun-ho do-it-yourself guy's out there, but at $65 & the piece of mind that it's done right is well worth it. Thanks for the advice.

Hey, sometimes you just don't want to deal with it, don't want to invest the time, or the money in tools or manuals. Nothing wrong with that.

There's a lot of things I won't even consider working on. Like air-conditioning, or brake systems.
