I currently have a IO 3.0 mercruiser. First boat. Yesterday i was pulling the kids tubing and found a stranded boater. towed him in. after i towed him in idled out a little ways and shut down to let the kids get in on the tube. Went to restart the boat and it cranked over and would not fire. Opened power lever all way still would not catch. Cranked off and on for the next 3 min. Finally it caught. Do i need to let it sit? Run the blower. Temp on the motor is 130 to 140. engine performs flawlessly. When i do a start first thing i do have ot let it idle for a few minutes around a 1000 before i can engage it in reverse to back out.

Re: Engine hard starting after shutting down

I have also had hard starting issues when "warm". Starts right up at the dock every time. But after shutting down after a run, hard starting if I try to start soon after. I never pin pointed the exact cause, but started by changing out fuel filters (I think I had moisture in my fuel) and it got better. Adjusted the carbs down (it was running a little rich, maybe it was being flooded a little) and it got even better. No more problems, fires up every time after a run, but still takes a little more cranking and full throttle (I heard something about the fuel being "boiled" after running awhile?, or maybe still running too rich). Anyway, messing with the fuel side of things helped mine out, but of course yours could be something totally different (timing, electrical?).

may not be your problem but my fathers 140 did exactly this on saturday.

after you shut it down, pull the air cleaner and watch for drops or a trickle of gas in the carb.

it may be draining through, and flooding.
