I am having trouble with my tilt and trim on my 1980 Johnson 140. it has 3 up/down switches throughout the boat, all of them work in the down position. I replaces the solenoid... it is a single solenoid application and I have looked at the wiring diagram until i am blue in the face! I can jump the (+) battery to both the blue and the green and the motor works just fine. can anyone help me out here.

Thanks,

Re: 1980 Johnson 140 TRIM PROBLEM

The solenoid only works on raising the motor; this is because of the extra power needed to offset the thrust of the outboard while underway.

Check the voltage coming out of the solenoid to be sure that the switch is activating the solenoid.

There are two types of solenoid. One is grounded through the case and the other has to be grounded by a wire. In either, you need to be sure that the ground is there or the switch can't activate the solenoid to allow power to pass through it.
