Hey, I was about to buy a mariner 8hp 1986, on my way I stoped to look at a nissan 2000 9.8 2 stroke. It was clean and ran awsome, good pis stream, in cosmetic great shape and everything checked out! The lady selling it becuse her husband had passed and she had no need for it had no clue what the oil mix for it is, the can had a tag tyhat said 25 to 1 anyone know if this is right? Also i gave her 350 for it she had no idea what to ask for price, was that a fair deal for all involved? I am not trying to screw an old lady over.

The wire just ties things together for corrosion protection. The one screw cap is for the oil level in the lower unit (maybe?). There should be another screw head lower in the gear case for draining it. You use the lower hole to pump oil in the gear case until it starts to run out of the top one, put the top one back in and then quickly screw in the bottom one, don't worry if you loose a small amount of oil, that is normal and allows for expansion. The other is for a connector to flush the motor after running in salt water.

Price was fair.
The oil ratio is 50:1 TCW-3.

There are several bonding wires to reduce electrolytic corrosion. They should stay in place.

The drain/fill plugs and seal washers for them are cheap, and available at any dealer. Odds are one was lost, and the only appropriate metric screw the guy had handy was a hex head cap screw.

Re: nissan 9.8 2 stroke

got the motor out for the first time today and it ran real well! was only able to run it for about 10 min but everything seemed to be great. However when I lifted the motor so it would not hit the bottom while I loaded it on the triler i noticed the water that was dripping out of the hole (not the same hole as the impeler but located right in the center) was hot to the touch. Is this normal?

Re: nissan 9.8 2 stroke

Could you describe where the water was dripping? The impeller isn't a hole, but a part of the water pump. While you can see the water inlets when the motor is assembled, but not the impeller. Cooling water exits this model primarily through the hub, but also through the exhaust relief on the aft of the motor, above the waterline. There are also a couple of places where water drain out when the motor is first pulled out of the water. In any event, warm/hot is probably OK -- boiling is not.

Just to clarify what i ment to say is not the side hole that the impeller clearly pumps too but a hole in the dead center at the rear of the engine.

OK, got it. The stream you usually check is the telltale or "pee tube" that shows the water system is pressurized.

The location in the aft end sounds like the idle exhaust relief port, and it is also water cooled. That water will be exhaust temperature, so that's normal.

You can get a copy of the owner's manual at http://www.tohatsu.com/tech_info/manuals.html which wouldn't hurt. Elvin's site includes parts catalogs at http://www.internetoutboards.com/PartsCatalogMenu.htm
