Hi, I have a 1989 85HP force OB. I was in the lake last monday. Everything went fine untill we are getting ready to go back home. When I tried to start the engine. There is no respond from the starter, I just replace the starter not too long ago and it have been working fine. So my question is that, is there any thing one can do when the starter decide to "die" on you. Is there any way to manually start the engine? for example using a rope and try to turn the fly wheel?
P/S: the reason I am thinking that it might work is that, my engine start real smooth after it get warm. I feel like the starter is turn the wheel for less then a second.

The starters gears make it easy to turn that flywheel. I dont think a rope can do it or they would have a safety/back up rope installed already. I could be wrong though, but thats a lot of compression/motor for a rope.

You'll see the plate on top of the flywheel. There is a spot you can put a starter rope on it and pull In case the starter fails. Just slip in to the groove wind around and pull.

I agree with previous poster -try it one day. I have a '91 Force 150hp O/B and have started it with a rope on a number of occasions. Buy a lawnmower pull rope and handle - the kind you use to replace one if it breaks on your mower. The rubber handle can make it a lot easier on your hands.

I've started my 20 horse this way, But havent tried my 55. As long as the motor is in good condition, I dont see why you wouldn't be able to.

Without the proper pullstart assembly on the flywheel could be dangerous. The rope could get caught up in the flywheel and spin uncontrollable possibly injuring someone.
