1990 5.8 rebuilt and ready for the lake, hooked up everything as it was and the coil and the bottom of the dist. gets HOT. Had the Alt. rebuilt as well, and a new coil. Now the coil stats to be used with external resistor and there never has been one with this system. Could the ext. resister be the problem or should I try coil w/internal resister? HELP

What are you working on?

Is there voltage at your coil with the key off? Did you replace your alternator with the exact alternator that came with the engine originally?

Measure the voltage at the excite and sense terminals of the alternator with the key off and report back. Did you happen to wire those two up backwards?

Yes, there is voltage at the coil with the key in the off pos. And as for the original alt. I just had the original rebuilt.

So...how about the sense and excite lines at the alterantor? You have them on correctly? For a test, take them both off and measure the voltage at the coil.

Will Do!!! I made an idiots drawing so that I wouldn't make that mistake. I'm wondering if the alt. shop could have wired the alt in backwards. I've triple checked my drawing as well photos that I took and all is connected as it was originally. I will say this it appears that many other hands have been in this boat before mine, seriously considering new harness.

Re: Coil gets hot with key off!!

There is a wiring diagram in the Adults Sticky at the top of the forum. I suggest you look at that. You either wired it wrong or the alternator shop didn't do something correct with your alternator. Sounds like will have the same problem as the guy in this thread where the motor won't turn off after the key is turned off.
