Evinrude 3hp Lightwin Pouring Gas From Carb

Just rebuilt the carburetor on an old litewin; the engine screams when I fire it up! I?m shocked how this 50 year old engine runs.

I?m just having one minor problem?I can?t figure out my carburetor is leaking. I?ve torn the carb apart 4 times and adjusted the float with NO success?

The engine runs great (when it?s at full throttle)?but when I try to idle the engine for 30 seconds and then put it back at full throttle, the engine continues to idle and then dies.

At this point the carburetor will start to pour out gas until I close I fuel line and air vent.

Any suggestions?

Bad float.... Bad float setting.... Bad float needle valve assembly.

(Carburetor Float Setting)

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (just ever so slightly off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

Ah! So maybe I installed the float needle spring incorrectly?

If I hold the carb upside down, the needle spring pushes the float arm up; based on your recommended float settings, my float would never work correctly no matter how much I bent the arm.

I reattached the needle spring so it now clips around the float arm and I bent the float to match your recommendations.

Please see attached ?before? and ?after? photos, do you think the float looks correct now?

Yes, the spring is to clipped over the float arm. It (the float) still looks too high though. The end opposite the hinge end should be slightly high but not so much.
