Shear pin props no longer made??

Hey everyone. I have a 10 1/2 x 12 prop that takes a shear pin that just spun a hub. After going to the local boat store for a replacement, I'm told these types of props are no longer made. I can't find any new online (hopefully I'm just not looking in the right place) but I did manage to track one down on Ebay but I'm still in the hunt for another one. Are these things really no longer made?

I've had trouble locating a lot of parts while trying to get my 68 Johnson up and running but managed to make due and actually get creative and built some of the things I needed, but c'mon, something as major as a prop is no longer available? This engine runs fantastic if I can find parts for it, but I might as well throw it away if I can't get a prop

You should be able to have the prop repaired and you might even find a rebuilt prop at a prop shop. While you can't advertise on this forum it wouldn't hurt to mention the details on your motor and prop.I have a 65 Merc 500 that as far as I can tell they don't make props for anymore, and it is more state of the art than yours with through hub exhaust and spline drive.Fortunately I have 3 props on hand.
Keep watching ebay also There is a forum and free webvertise at www.aomci.org

Re: Shear pin props no longer made??

This thread was more of a rant than anything else. It's just that I'm out on the lake Fri morning and spin my prop hub. No problem I thought, I'll just hit the local boat store, get a prop and be back on the lake in no time. I find out they don't have it, I can't get a new prop even if I wanted one, I did find and buy one on Ebay, but the point is that I'm now stuck without a boat for the weekend because of something as major as a prop!

There are still tons of these old motors in use, and when they just flat out quit making even the major necessary parts for them it's like they spit in the face of those of us that would rather use a perfectly good engine than waste money on something just because it's "newer". My Johnson 40hp is a great running engine now that I'm through with it (I'm a new owner to this boat) and I don't need anything else, I just need replacement parts readily available.

Your missing the good part of your motor.
Its still running well at 42 years old.You could walk down the street to your local NAPA and order coils, points, condensers, tune up kits,Carb kits,Needle and seat,Impellers,Thermostats and Thermostat kits. You can get any number of obscure parts from any well established BRP/Evinrude/Johnson dealer. Then there are the many many internet sellers/ebay etc with just about any new or used part you could ever need.including the afore mentioned prop. Many of these vendors have detailed application info in their adds and those I have delt with had a liberal return policy. For My slightly obscure 55 Bucaneer 5 (closely related to the E/J 5.5 )I easily found very reasonably priced used prop, new coils, new impeller from ebay adds most had detailed application info.Took me about 20 to 30 minutes and I am ploddingly slow on the computer.

Drill a couple of 1/8 holes at an angle through the back of the prop bronze internal hub and into the aluminum holding it. Now drive in a couple of pins and the prop is as good as new.

I just did exactly that with 2 1/8" pins and they are now sheared off. 10-1/2 x 12 prop on 1959 35 HP.
What is the significance of the rubber? Is it vibration isolation? I assume it's not the safety clutch like new ones because there is a shear pin.
Does anyone know where I can buy a new hub?
Thanks.
