First a little history... When I aquired this boat it was not running and I rebuilt the engine. Had to be re-bored and oversized pistons put in. Also had a larger hole drilled into the water jacket for better water flow. Replaced the VRO with a mechanical fuel pump and just mix my fuel. It ran great for the last two seasons, NO problems what-so-ever! Last time I took it out I ran into a rock pretty darn hard with the lower unit. After restarting it it ran fine for a couple more hours. Then the problem started... lol... Continuous warning tone and no power to this thing!! It idles fine, and can get the RPMs up in nuetral, but put it in gear and the RPMs dont increase... it just keeps running but its terribly slow and getting slower. I assume that the collision had something to do with it. Any help would be outstanding! Thanks...

does your motor bog down when accelerating or just wont accelerate like it has a governor on it?

It will start to accelerate but very quicky acts like it's governed. If I continue to give it more throttle it starts to die but as long as I leave the throttle lever in a lower position it will continue to run. It got me back to the ramp anyway lol

Contrinuous horn i.s overheat. Hope your haven't continued to run it w/o investigation. Can you touch cylinder head after running? Normal temp is ~ 140* F. You may have damaged lower unit/water pump.

It was still pumping... The machinist that
rebored
the cylinders also drilled a 3/8in hole in the water jacket for more flow. Water was still comin out under pressure

Don't rely on telltale as proof of no overheat. Continuous horn suggests temp got over 190* F. It's NOT evidence of circulation and cooling, only that the pump has some output. Check for overheating.

Telltale is vastly overated!

Thanks for the info, I've always assumed that if it's pumping, it's cooling! I just checked compression... 120, 115, 120. So that's good. The warning, btw, comes on as soon as I turn on the ignition. Is this because it HAS overheated and needs to be reset? What I'm saying is I haven't run it since last weekend so I know it's not overheated now.

There is a temp sensor on the cyl head with a tan lead. Try disconnecting it to see if horn stops. If it does, wiring from sensor forward to horn is OK, temp sensor may be bad. The horn should sound whenever the tan lead is grounded. If the motor is running at normal temp, you should be able to touch cyl head (~140*F).

Your motor may have S.L.O.W. , a protective system which limits RPM to ~ 2500 when it thinks an overheat exists. There's a blocking diode (not sure where it is on your motor) which may have failed preventing exiting S.L.O.W. and restricting RPM. If S.L.O.W. is acting normally, it's reset by stopping and restarting the motor.

I haven't worked on a motor like yours recently ... you may find an OEM shop manual helpful at this point: outboardbooks.com or fleabay

Well, disconnecting the temp sensor had no effect! Could it be anproblem with the console?

The tan lead may be shorted to ground somewhere along its length, if disconnecting it from the temp sensor had no effect. See attached for typical wiring.
