1982 80hp lower unit

I have a 80hp 1982 Mariner ooutboard and can't get the lower unit out of forward. Any suggestions on what the problem might be?

Remove the shift cable from the motor and see if you can shift the motor manually. If so, then the problem is in the shift cable or controller. If not able to shift manually, then the problem will be in the lower unit, and that's a whole new can of worms.

Thanks for your reply. I found the problem after a lot of thought. The shift cam was in the wrong position when the lower unit was replaced. I took the unit off again and corrected the position and that did it. My own stupidity. I should have mentioned removing it in my request . Maybe my error can help someone else. Thanks
