Hi, Im a welder by trade,34yrs I personly would not recomend that, unless you bevel it so that you can get 100 percent pentration. And don't weld it in the wind or you will get prosity. That's something you don't want! Im personly perfer Stick, with same procedure.7018 rod.But if your just installing brackets you will be alright. If your running 110 to you welder, and if you stick it,go with 1/16 rods.If mig is all you got pull it in a garage to keep it out of the wind. And grind your metal good and clean.I would'nt weld any thing with alot of stress or movement with that low of voltage and that thick of metal.

welder a bit to small and operated by a novice = bad....

90 amps is better suited for 1/8" or less ... my lincoln weldpac 100 does real nice on 3/16" and it can do 1/4 but it takes more skill and doesn't do it nearly as well as my friends 180

What make bass boat trailer is made from 1/4" steel?

Most of my trailers, even the one under my 19' cuddy cabin is only made from thin tubing, my 16' bass boat sits on a C channel frame trailer made from maybe 1/8" thick C channel and I thought that was a pretty stout trailer.

The only thing 1/4" thick on any of my trailers is the spring leaves.

I might be wrong but I believe your Mig is a gasless welder which just multiplies the reasons of why this machine is not suited to what you are asking.

At least considering your welding experience.

For that reason you use it all the time he does not.

At least thats the impression I get being he asked whether he could weld with this type of welder.

I guess I missed the post where he said it was a gas setup or flux cored wire:D:D Lets not assume anything, but it can be done some way. McGill- whatcha got???

Pre-heat , and weld er up.

What he said.

I also would like to know who made the trailer out of 1/4 steel. That has to be the heaviest trailer made.

90 amp is not a big welder. I do almost all my welding with a 120 amp. and dont weld 1/4" but once in a blue moon.

I've seen a few small trailers that were 1/4" thick... they were 1x2x1/4" c channel frames and were pretty old.

Pretty simple. You turn the gas on and you have a gas unit. You turn the gas off and you have a none gas unit. ;)

Pre-heat? What the heck are you pre-heating on a boat trailer?

Not really. Different wire, different polarity.

I am not pre- heating anything. It is just a suggestion to the OP on how to get it done with an undersized MIG welder so he can get his brackets ( of some sort) welded onto his trailer.

Re: 90amp mig welder with .o35 wire

So, we should ask what exactly he is attaching to the trailer. Is he hooking 1/4 to 1/4 that is a structural part of the trailer? Or is he wanting to stick a little chunk of 1/8 angle onto the rear of it for a license plate bracket?

I've got a friend that has made 3 great quality rock crawler trucks with nothing but a 100 amp Lincoln. He's never had one of his welds fail. I personally wouldn't weld anything over 1/8 inch with it, but he does his prep right, and has had zero issues.

If the OP has welding skills or a buddy that does, maybe. But only with the proper preparation steps. And even then I'd be scared if we're talking about welding on a new tongue or shackle hanger.

Personally, I'd rather series 3 car batteries together and weld it with 7018 at 36 volts DC negative. It actually works pretty good if you have no other options!

Re: 90amp mig welder with .o35 wire

The man has a fender welder,Flux Core or Gas! Ive been around welding all my life, Don't tell him something that might get him or his family,or someone else hurt! It just doesn't have enough heat to pentatrate 1/4'' steel like it should. No less the prodisity you get with Mig and wind problems.I would go no less than 120 amps and i also would use a Stick machine with 3/32'' 7018 welding rods.and layer your stringers. 18 yrs as pipeline welder / 12yrs Stainless steel welder in Pharmacital Manufacturing.( TIG )

Re: 90amp mig welder with .o35 wire

A 90 amp MIG machine will have trouble getting decent penetration on 1/8 inch material. Flux core wire has better penetration than solid wire with C-25, but even then, you are asking for trouble on even just 1/8 inch. Bump up to 1/4, and it ain't gonna happen, plain and simple. Couple that with a novice operator, and you are asking for trouble.

This falls under the case of: if you have to ask, the answer is NO. If you aren't proficient enough to know the answer (and there is nothing wrong with not knowing the answer, we all have to start somewhere), you likely aren't proficient enough to properly complete the repair. Down the road, when you have gained a lot of experience, you'll realize how bad of an idea this is.
