OK, I "found" a Nissan 9.9D 2 stroke, serial # 74037 in a family member's garage where it sat for at least 7 or 8 years. He thinks it is 10 years old, and the model number seems to be either 1998 or 2003. I'll confirm the actual model year with Nissan on Monday. It is in beautiful shape, and he says it was only used a few times in fresh water before it was put away.

1. Is there any danger in dropping it into a bucket of water and starting it up for a few seconds to see if it still works?

2. What steps should I take to service it before putting it into use?

3. What would a fair price be, assuming it is 10 years old and in good shape?

4. He thinks it was "modified" to the 15hp version. What can I check to confirm this?

I know that is a ton of information I'm asking for. I've found some of it doing searches here, but anything you can do to help would be great.

Thanks,

Greg

1) - Take the plugs out and squirt some oil in the cylinders, turn it over a number of times, before water testing. Watch the pee hole. No water squirting out, shut-off ASAP.

2) - If it was put away with fuel in carb, it will need to be removed and cleaned/serviced

Change water pump impeller.

Fuel pump diaphram? (not sure if this deterieates with time, think it is more nylon than rubber)

Compression Check

New plugs

Change lower unit oil.

Decarb

- Not nec in that order, though.

3) Pricing, to me, is always a local thing and condition.

4) It is an advance timing gear. I don't know how to id, but believe it will allow the butterfly to fully open, which can be checked. The experts can confirm or deny this.

What John said, plus...

You will want a big water container -- not merely a bucket -- if you are going to do your own tank test. A garbage barrel is OK for slow speed testing. Or use an "ear muff" garden hose flushing adapter. Don't even pull the starter rope without the LU being in water, as the impeller may have "stuck" to the cup. You likely want a new impeller due to age and dry rot anyway...

The conversion kit to make a late model 9.9D2 (your serial number should qualify) into a 15 is the advance cam, part number 3M3637180M which allows full timing advance to be synchronized with a fully open throttle plate.

As always, consider getting a Factory service manual, available at any Tohatsu/Nissan dealer. Money well spent.

Re: First Steps with "Forgotten" Nissan 9.9

Thanks, guys! I'm taking it to a local dealer to have a basic service and checkout done. They advertise lower unit service for $7.95, so I guess I can at least have it checked pretty inexpensively.

The big question is what is fair to pay my family member for the engine. On the one hand it has been sitting around for ever and would probably never have been sold and just rotted away had I not stumbled on it and it turned out to be the exact engine I need for my boat tender. On the other hand, it is in pristine condition (assuming seals, impeller, etc aren't rotted from sitting 8 years.)

It is very difficult to find a price on one of these. Where is the best place to look for used outboards to get an idea on the value? Assume it is 9.9D2 Nissan, really good shape after a checkup and seal/impeller replacement. He's not looking to get retail from me and will probably take whatever I offer him. I just want to be fair.

Anyone want to hazard a guess? A new 9.9 is less than $2k, and I've seen them used for anything between $500 and $1200.

Cheers,

Greg

For $7.95, not sure if that even covers the cost of the lower lube.

You might try the NADA Guides website at http://www.nadaguides.com/ Follow the link at the top to the "Boats" section. It'll give you the "blue book" value of outboard motors (you'll need to know the model year and model #). As with anything though it's just a "guide" since local market conditions will determine the price...but at least it's a starting point. Also keep in mind that in some areas the old 9.9 2str are "prized" items due to their light weight and since people can't buy a 9.9 2str anymore.

And of course the other factor is the "family member" factor...close family member & someone you like? Or a creepy uncle that you never really liked much? :)

That was $7.95 "plus parts and tax." Guess I left that part out. :D Still a pretty good deal.

Thanks fot the NADA guide link. I had no idea they did outboard motors, too, though it makes sense. That's perfect for what I need. He's not looking for a bunch of money, I just want to make sure I don't rip him off giving him $200 for a motor that's worth a bunch more.

Thanks for all of the assistance! I have another question, but IAW forum rules I'll start another thread.

Cheers,

Greg
