Greetings All,

Our Marina called yesterday to inform us our Mercruiser V6 3.4 was leaking gear oil from the drain plug in the outdrive. They also said there was oil in the bilge area. The mechanic was not available to discuss the issue but the marina guy said he didn't think it would be an issue to take the boat out this weekend. My question to you guys is: Should I be worried about taking the boat out for a couple of hours and what should I look for?

Thanks so much for your help!

I would buy another drain plug with a new gasket before I went out. Only a couple dollar item and takes just a few moments to replace. Those gaskets should not be reused, and should be replaced when you change the oil.

You will probably be fine taking it out, but I wouldn't personally risk getting water in the drive.
Good luck.

Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate it. I do not know how to replace this drain plug myself - hopefully we can find someone to help us with this. What is the worst case scenario if we got water in the drive?

Thanks...

Ayuh,... You'd be buying a New 1,+ paying somebody to install it...

Yea..Like Bond-o said..you definitely Don't want to mess around with water in your drive. That 2 dollar drain plug, will turn into a whole lot more in a hurry.

The drain plug is simple..you remove it with a flat head screw driver. Do you have a marine shop near by, or a bass pro shop? They will sell the plug and gasket there, at least mine did. Will take all of 3 minutes to change.
